Not entirely sure what constitutes British in this context - finance? cast? location? director? but have agreed with many selections in this thread. (Barry Lyndon, Colonel Blimp and Frenzy being particular favourites.)

Probably not to everyone's taste but if period/historical is your (vintage Gladstone) bag you should try:

Far From the Madding Crowd (the 67 version - wonderfully atmospheric)
The Charge of the Light Brigade (68 - deeply flawed but oddly enjoyable)
The Go Between (71 - sublime)

Probably more Franco-British (and with American leads) but as it was Ridley Scott's first film I'd also nominate "The Duellists". Napoleonic period-correct uniforms and fencing add up to a sumptuous dollop of eye-candy that doesn't really need a story or narrative (so he didn't really bother).

Also some good UK-cast early stuff from the American director Sidney Lumet. "The Hill" is great but the utterly bleak "The Offence" is IMO a stunner. Both feature Sean Connery and the latter proves, for me at least, that he was a great actor, given the right role.

If you liked Fury check out They were not divided - it's a black and white war film made in 1950 about a British tank regiment in Normandy that was made by guys who actually fought and it features the same Tiger tank that is in Fury ... highly rated.

    Others:

    Whisky Galore
    The Italian Job
    Alfie
    This sporting life
    39 steps
    Trainspotting
    Saturday night and Sunday morning
    Brighton rock
    The Lavender Hill mob
    The full monty

Depressing how few of those mentioned provoke any positive thoughts from me. Only really 28 Day later and Withnail & I. A lot of those mentioned were good but have waned with time. Recent good British movies? Edgar Wright ones I suppose but they are suffering from Pegg Fatigue.

The UK does produce many of the best actors and filmmakers in the world, they just seem to work better for the US film industry.

Personally I think (based on being ancient) that the UK has made better films than the US which these days is all about super hero shit and Star Wars style franchises. I watched Quartet without any great exceptions but it was funny - low budget, but stuffed to the gills with British acting talent from Billy Connelly to Michael Gambon. If you want mindless action then US films are the way to go otherwise British cinema offers some great films

Wis'd back at you for your choices, in particular these.
I guess that "Sporting Life" and "Saturday Night..." open up the whole "Kitchen Sink" genre and there are some great films to go at there.
