Not sure how this will go down on here..  When ever  I have posted anything to do with rap on a guitar forum it doesn't usually go down that well..  But I will try anyway  :)

If you haven't heard of Body Count they are a metal band with Ice T on vocals.. So a really weird mix of metal/rap and punk....

Ive always loved rap, not so much all the gangster stuff (even though I like some of it) but more the old school stuff like De La Soul....

Anyway, new album called Bloodlust coming soon and heres there new single..

Cop Killer was a great record, as was quite a bit of Ice T's earlier work

    Ahem...

I got a ho from the east
I got a ho from the west
A ho that likes to jack it off and rub it in her chest

    Etc

  • I had the reissued/sanitised version of the first album with "Cop Killer" replaced by "Freedom of Speech". I wasn't as impressed with Born Dead and kind of forgot about them after that.

They make a good racket for a bunch of old guys (Ice T 59, Ernie C 57)!!

Someone in my group of chums had a cassette with the full version of Cop Killer but I could only get the CD mentioned above. I saw them on the Born Dead tour around 93/94 I think. It's a strange thing looking back - very controversial but not so good live I'm afraid.

My only memory of Ice T and his rock/rap thing is the track from the film Judgement Night, still one of my favorite sound track CDs to this day, some great bands and odd mash ups on it.

I got into guitar music through rap tapes passed around when I was a kid. ("Listen to these naughty men swearing and talking about sex!") I really liked the sound of the guitar parts they'd sampled from G'n'R, Van Halen, etc. 2Live Crew and NWA led to Ice T, and then along came Body Count just as I was beginning to explore original rock albums by G'n'R, Slayer, Metallica, etc. So it all fits together for me.

I had a taped copy of Cop Killer and was aware of the legal wrangling involved for many of these groups. Nowadays, I somehow doubt Body Count will impress me as much as Eminem did in 8 Mile, but I'm willing to give it a shot. It was funny to hear Gretchen Menn recite 2Live Crew on NGIS the other week, though I'm not sure I entirely agree with her viewpoint.

The Judgement Night soundtrack is bostin'.

Great rap/rock mixes in my eyes:

    Rage Against the Machine

    Biohazard

    Extreme

Winger (Tone Loc couldn't make it, Kip did the rap himself)

    Downset

I've had far more time for those than for the stuff that has become known as hip hop in recent decades.

I quite like a lot of hip-hop but Body Count were always a bit much for me.

I had the 1st one (proper version on cassette tape!), Born Dead and Manslaughter.

    All good fun!

  • Loved the old hip hop, and Ernie C was great. Will definitely give the new stuff a spin.

I saw Body Count back in the day and they were terrible. However, they now has Juan Garcia and he seems to have raised their game considerably.
Ice  was the second ever gangster rapper and the first to really put LA on the hip hop map.

I've got Cop Killer (original version FWIW) and liked it at the time, but I never bothered with the subsequent stuff.

I never forgave Ernie C for the Black Sabbath Forbidden album, although it wasn't really all his fault it was such a load of shite.

    'Thought provoking' at best.

Saw Ice T at Phoenix donkeys years ago. Ice T did a rap set which was good. He stayed on stage chatting to the crowd as the roadies set up Body Count and they were shocking

I had the 1992 album 'Body Count'. I was 16 and thought Body Count were the nuts! Its probably been 20 years since I listened to them.

I saw them back at some point in the early 90s, they were not good. Their new album, however, while its not going to win any awards for subtlety or nuance, is really really awesome

Listening to it now (I was trying to listen to some Allan Holdsworth - RIP - but he's just too highbrow for me... so by way of contrast....)

It's good.  I'm trying to ignore the lyrics so I don't get muthafucka fatigue.

As a middle aged straight ahead jazzer I cannot not believe that NO ONE HAS TOLD ME ABOUT BODY COUNT BEFORE

I'm really enjoying their music! Top recommendation!
