    No.... McLaughlin is an upward only pick slanter for sure.

    Looks slightly slanted, but not as much as 45°. If you notice, even though his thumb slants down at 45°, the tip of his thumb, where the pick is held against, is upturned and much more parallel with the strings.

    Hmm, I don't think it is.  I'm not sure any player keeps their pick at a 45 degree angle all of the time. McLaughlin is probably keep his pick angled at a way which feels good to him.  45 degrees is,  in my opinion, a hard angle to maintain during picking and to keep your hand relaxed at the same time.
