So this weekend I am hoping to pickup a JA-90 tele, which plays lovely and is spot on for me and my rock n soul style playing , the only thing is the pickups. The Seymour Duncans are ok, but just don't seem to have that bite. I'm probably going to change them over, but to which? Is there any that you good people. . Well...people would say would work best?

Could just be the pots that need changing?

Hmmm good point, though to be fair to fender they've always, for me, been spot on. Will have a look when I get my hands on it

  • Oil city Jin-go. Best sounding P90 I've ever heard. Crunch & clarity, just brilliant.

Jared James Nichols uses SD P90's, and one thing I'd never accuse him or them of is lacking bite.

I hated the P90's in the JA90.  Too hot, but not in a good way.
I really like Tonerider Vintage 90's.  Quite cheap, but sound most excellent.
    Mojo make lovely P90's too.

I have a BKP bluenote neck in a goldtop and it's sublime. I should get the matching bridge but the stock is ok. IMO these would be perfect for soul & rock.

My favourite Mojo's are his Filterfoils Filtertron footprint goldfoil.  Fantastic pickups.  A bridge one of these with a neck P90 would be an awesome combo.

    Oil City Firewatch.

Had a Jin-Go and it was cool, but a bit shouty for me. The Firewatch is a bit more cultured and has more of that quintessential P-90 character.

The Jin-Go recipe has been changed since yours @Bucket, it was one of the first five produced and we took onboard the comments you made :-)

Lollar P90s are great - I have some in a Tele I bought from one of the guys here and it sounds fantastic!  But I haven't tried most of the other ones recommended here, so I can't give any comparison TBH

Agreed, i,ve got a Lollar P90 in a Junior which sounds great but like most P90s can be very noisey.
