I read an article the other day that said the idea of being "left" or "right" brained is pretty unconvincing, you just happen to be good or bad at certain things naturally.

What does have broad support is the 10,000 hours idea.  Spend 10k hours of your life practising and learning and you can become an expert at pretty much anything.

So - sadly for me as its so much easier to drool over and buy gear - the solution to almost every guitarists problems is more practise.

Our various neural networks are formed in different parts of the brain, and that includes motor fu cation,as well as memory.  

For example, I play all our band songs (all originals) "from memory".  I don't recall them just as I am about to play them, but my brain has built neural pathways so that I just play what is needed. 
If we try and rewrite part of the song, or even if we say "play from the middle8" I often don't have a clue.  This is because I then need to switch to a different part of my brain to access those different functions or pathways.

Not just any practice, though. Needs to be quality, focussed practice.

I think the 10,000 hour strategy has been debunked as well but, as @Carlos said, if your practice sessions are focused and not just random noodling you'll be fine
