Hmm...which guitar to look for? Something retro ideally. Plan aborted

For £300-ish, you could assemble something (with the aid of a friendly luthier) to the spec you require.

Note I said "assemble" - and not "custom build"!

From bits I acquired/had lying around, these were put together a year or two ago...

Which one did you mean for £300? That Teisco though, like every Teisco ever, appears to be as ugly as sin Haha
You didnt say it had to look good... :)

Now that is a guitar! Though I'm not sure I'd be big enough to lift it

Talking of Hofner...wouldn't an original 176 or Galaxie butter your parsnips?

Lol I tried my hardest to like Strat shape ones (I even did a thread about them) but they do nothing for me I'm afraid - whatever I go for is a compromise to an extent but I would like at least something exciting about it :)

What do people think of Mustangs and Pro/Duo Sonics? Are they too toyish being so small as a main guitar? I'm fairly small myself though so it'd probably not look out of place

How about the new squier offsets? V.cheap leaving budget to upgrade taste.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.

I did look at those already but there's only the Affinity Jazzmaster that is below budget, but with the pickup upgrade and them getting them installed they don't seem quite as good value. I shall certainly look closer at them though thanks

The short scale Fender "student" models have a certain character of their own. The current model P90 Mustang has more oomph than a regular model. There, again, a couple of well chosen Lace Sensors could improve a regular model with no need to modify the pickguard. The Fender MIJ Kurt Cobain Mustang adds a humbucker.*

Ultimately, these minor Fender designs are less popular than the Stratocaster and Telecaster for a reason.

    * I dare say that Mr. Seven could furnish a photograph of this model.

But if you don't like Teles or Strats because they are dull, supposedly these lesser models could be worth a look? As I say I've only played crap guitars like Squiers and Variaxes so the replacement won't have much to live up to

I've got one of the £115 Squier Mustangs and whilst it needed a bit of tweaking it's a great fun little thing.

How about the G&L Tribute Fallout?  Meets just about all your requirements (pickups, scale length, radius, colours), and looks kind of retro without being an obviously slavish copy of anything (a bit Mustang-ish, maybe).
New fangled trading feedback link right here!

Out of interest what needed fixing on it?

Good call! Thanks I'll have a listen and lookout for those. Never really heard of that one so that's interesting

I've got a Squier Modern Player Jaguar on Reverb. Three colour sunburst, two Di Marzio humbuckers, concentric knobs (ooh-er), quite an out there guitar.  Like new too.   Fancy Schaller bridge fitted by Feline too - cost over £70 just for the bridge but it makes all the difference in the world.
Could do a deal if you were interested.  Ignore the inapproriate vid put there by reverb.
