Loose ferrules

I've just got some machines for my Fender MIM neck, which are the correct fitting.

However, the ferrules are slightly loose on the top side of the headstock and just fall out.

What's an appropriate way to hold them in place?

Wrap them with a turn of paper masking tape.

Depending on how loose they are a strip from an aluminium can makes a good sleeve and less likely to compress/cause issues than masking tape..

Thanks for those ideas - trying to see what folks use.
I have aluminium from baking trays (which I also use for neck shims).
I was wondering whether to use some kind of glue or mastic?
I've also been recommended superglue, but I'm not so sure about that.

Depends how loose they are I suppose. If there is a visible gap thin aluminium is a good shout. If they are just a tiny bit loose I'd use superglue; I have done this and it works fine - still got the guitar and no issue 4 years down the line.

  • Low viscosity superglue bled into the existing compression grooves of previous ferrules works well. You can always sand it back if you go too far.

Otherwise I use a couple of turns of PTFE or, as ICBM recommends, masking tape.
