Beethoven's 7th. Superb melody which just tears your heart out and punches you in the guts.

  • If I had to pick just one piece instead of my chosen 16 hour opera... It would have to be either...

    Clair de lune.
    This.

It's a cliche now, I suppose, but there's a reason people love it.

I've heard it hundreds of times and that beautiful melody still makes the hair on my arms stand on end.

  • Dvorak Symphony 9 (new world) - amazing from beginning to end, Planets by Holst is good all the way through, oh and Delibes Lakmé (the flower Duet) as well for something shorter :)

If you're asking about Classical Music as a broad description of composed Music then I would say Mahler's 9th.
If you're asking about the specific Classical Period then I would probably say Mozart's Requiem.

Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, and in particular the last movement. It is heart-wrenchingly sad and tears at your soul.

^ Ooh. Good shout. A few years back, I took Mrs9000 on one of those helicopter trips that lands in the Grand Canyon. As the aircraft came over the rim the Largo from this piece was being piped through the headphones. Perfect.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto no 3 in C Major. Just massively wonderful:

I'm also a big Debussy fan, his Suite Bergamasque is sublime:

Was just gonna post Satie's Gymnopedie.

I also really like that Con te Partiro which isn't really "classical" - it's modern operatic pop music - but I think it counts in a "you know classical when you hear it" way.
