Tracks where they've hidden the '1' in the intro..

What's Hot

Drives me nuts.  Not big and not clever.  Songs where you think you've mentally locked onto the '1,2,3,4' and then they start playing or singing on the bloody 2 (or what you thought was the 2, or 3 or 4 !!).

An example is Led Zep's 'Rock n Roll'....

Another is The Who's "I'm Free" - this one just messes my head up completely...

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.
Also chips are "Plant-based" no matter how you cook them.

Never really thought about those two to be honest. Although I am annoyed by the way that All right now and Sunshine of your love both seem to chuck a random extra bar in at some point

  • The Intro to Drive My Car- The Beatles is a bit of a weird one.

Carwash by Rose Royce - the first clap is on the second beat of the bar

Too Young To Die by Jamiroquai - the bassline enters on beat 4-and-a-half with a tied quaver held onto a crotchet at the beginning of bar 1 - starts with a lurch!

    It's a musical intelligence test.
No - it's musical 'being a dick'.  Artists trying to show off by messing with the groove which never ever improves the song but just says "I'm a dick trying to show you how 'clever' I am".  Like these dicks who pick bizarre time sigs that you can't tap your foot to, can't sing along with and spend most of the time you're listening to it trying to follow the groove like a drunk trying to climb the stairs of a moving double-decker bus whilst holding a jelly.  It's musical snobbery for the most part - a device used by people who feel that common time is too common for them.

So you didn't pass the test then?

Dicks - the lot of them.  Dicky McDick singing pretentious cryptic lyrics in 13:9 time with a bar of 22.7:48 thrown in just in case, god forbid, anyone thinks they've sussed it.

No... I like a nice bit of 5:4 and even 7:4, but don't you go changing that shit halfway through (OK, I'll accept a shift if it's musically valid) but messing with the intro ??  That's just despicable.

  • I think Led Zeppelin's "Rock n Roll” starts on the "4-and" of 1, 2, 3, 4 and it messes with me every bloody time. Great groove but tricky to play right.

Don't see the issue with that - apart from it being a bit shit.  The switch from 3:4 to 4:4 at 01:35 was mildly annoying, but it's easy to follow the groove.

Listen to all of it? Their songs tend to wander off into silliness before returning at some point at the end. Listen around the 3 minute mark.

  • A lot of people get the 1 wrong on Sex On Fire. When depping, I once made the mistake of expecting the band to know when to come in, without giving them the count in.

I always think Charlie Watts comes in wrong, on the off beat in the intro to Start Me Up but somehow corrects it after a bar or so.

Ginger Wildheart does this a lot. Try finding the 1 in this intro...

This one may catch you out too.
