What 1x12 combo... Thinking of going for a DSL401C.

Looking for a lightweight (20kgish) 1x12 (or possibly 1x10) combo.  Ideally Marshall inspired two channel or maybe a one channel with a second master volume or solo boost.

Needs to be loud enough to gig with, but I think most valve amps are.

Budget is up to £1,000 but think I'd like to spend less really.

I've been looking at the Victory combos, Friedman runt, Marshall DSL5 or 15, Mini Jubilee.  Anyone got any interesting suggestions that I might have missed?  Quite fancy trying a mesa V25 but might be out of budget.

Thanks

    Marshall 2525C.
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

Mesa Express 5:50/25 either will do the trick. Loads of choices if your only needing a good clean base for pedals.

  • Egnater Rebel 30 or Laney VC30 are excellent value for money and might be an outside bet.

  • Not really a Marshall sound but you could do a LOT worse than the Mesa Studio 22+ that's in the classifieds at the moment.  Loud, light weight and they sound great imo.

Thanks, some amps there I hadn’t thought about.

Think there was a Mesa Express 1x10 combo on eBay the other day that went for about £500, should have given that a try.

Looking at eBay there is an Egnater Tweaker 40 combo probably a mile or two away from me. Could be a possibility.

Marshall DSL40C, or DSL401 with reliability mods.

    Marshall JCM900 2501.

JCM 900 is an interesting shout.  Can't see any 2501's for sale at the moment though.

I had also been thinking about a JCM 800 4010.

What would potentially be the better option?

I have a Mesa Subway Rocket Reverb that sounds up your street.

Small, light (14kg), upgraded speaker and can get very loud.

Orange Crush Pro CR60C. OK, not valve, but loud enough to gig, about the right weight, and just over £400.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

The JCM800 4010 is a brilliant amp and it's what I use to gig with but it's a reasonably heavy combo.

Hmm really thinking i'll go down the Marshall route.  JCM900’s look great value as well.

What werw the reliability mods for the dsl 401?

The 4010 is better-made and in my opinion better-sounding, but it's larger, heavier, has less gain and no footswitchable second MV.

Heatsink on the bridge rectifier which overheats, bias saver resistors across the MV pot to prevent valve failure, and biasing them more sensibly are the big ones, but I also increase the spacing between the back of the chassis and the top of the cabinet, and solder the speaker connections. There's actually not much else that regularly goes wrong with them.

    Thanks @ICBM ;

I could possibly deal with the weight but from a practical point the second mv is important.

Final amp in to the Marshall mix.

    JVM215c.

    Any thoughts on those?

It depends on what you're looking for. They don't sound like the classic old Marshalls (they're not supposed to). It might be prudent to wait a little while until the revamped DSLs are officially announced as it seems the DSL15, which is on your list of possibilities, is being replaced by a new DSL20 with EL34s and an FX loop.

Just out of interest, what was wrong with the Atma? Didn't it tick most of the boxes?
