PMSL. So true. I hate private plates. Elitist tasteless nonsense.
Agree. So his names JON or SAM or whatever. So what? And the tossers who alter letters or numbers a bit or add dots to make to make something, pathetic.
What if someone buys a car which already has a private plate on it?
Take it off and put the original back on. I can't stand them, really. Its (IMO of course) a raging example of everything that is wrong with social climbing.

Luckily my parents had the foresight to call me GJ66MHX so it saves me shelling out for a costly private plate.

Yep, I was on a date once and espoused this very viewpoint, only to escort the young lady back to her car, which had private plates. Oops.

I've got a private plate, no wrong spacing or dots added or anything - just my initials and the number 7. I don't see anything wrong with that. If for some reason someone found it to be offensive I would suggest perhaps they shouldn't look at it.

I got it because I wanted it, no other reason.

I haven't really thought about what it's saying about me to the wider world, but if people that don't know me are shallow enough to judge me on my number plate then I would suggest maybe they find a hobby or something.

Our is perceived to be a personal plate but it isnt....it just happens that it was my parents old car with an interesting plate, so when the car got scrapped after they passed away I retained it on my car just as keepsake sort of thing.

    That's a funny reversal!

People who think it's shallow to have vanity plates are shallow for thinking that.

Yeah, but....why did you want it??

They are a statement, otherwise why would people spend hundreds, if not thousands on them? Something that is highly conspicuous too. Its not like a watch or even a fancy pair of shoes. A private plate is right out there, a badge.

You dont have to explain it to anyone, of course. But, a private plate is by its very nature elitist. I dont think you can escape that. I'd be happy to be proved wrong though, and I am honestly not having a pop, I'm genuinely interested, cos I really don't like them!

You got me nailed Dawg. Everytime I get in my car, I cringe at my lack of plate worthiness. Had this problem all my life.

I pulled up only yesterday, next to a chap in his Jag with the plate 1 AM NOB, and honestly, I couldn't look up for the shame and inadequacy.

Everything we do is a statement isnt it?....the Car, the clothes, the hairdo ( if you got any) The House, ?

It all says something to the onlooker...although what its says may be perceived differently.

Why do we all want different things,...or as Radio 2 says....What makes us Human ;-)

They weren’t THAT expensive, last time I was aware. Admittedly, it was quite a while ago..
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Well unlike you I do like them, not stupid ones that spell 1 AM NOB or M1 NGE or T1 TTY -  just my initials that's all. Totally inoffensive. I just drive a little 2 seater roadster, but when I pull up next to a £400,000 Rolls Royce or Bentley I think I drop down quite a bit in the elitist stakes. I'm not trying to be elitist, it's just someone else's perception.

I'm comfortable with my private plate.

  • My plate cost about £400 twenty years ago. I'd say it's less of a statement than queuing up to spend a grand on the latest iPhone every two weeks. It's just a bit of individuality.

Mine is my first initial, then a number 8, then 3 letters. The 8 and the three letters spell my surname in full.

It's spaced legally, in the correct font and with no dot or any of that wank. Personally I don't really care what other people think. It's a little bit of cash spent once many years ago that will at the very least hold its value. It also stops the whole "New car every other year" neighbour snobbery.

I’d be happy to put that plate on my car! Or the one that spells Tosser!

The difference being that the I phone albeit overpriced, does have a practical use.

So does a distinctive number plate, it makes your car easier to find in large car parks. Honest.
