Tally it up: bought new or used?

What's Hot
Guys who have more money than me must be buying lots of guitars new and thank goodness, otherwise I'd have to do it myself. How often do you buy new?

New
GS mini from my wife 4 years ago
Peerless semi 8 years ago
low end Yamaha acoustic 8 yrs ago
Guild GAD30 7 yrs ago
Pricey parts tele

Used
In ten years, half of which in last 24 months:
7 basses, 5 X MIJs, MM & Sterling
and at least 8 guitars; Gibsons, Gretsch, MM & mid range teles

More new stuff than I initially thought.
5 (under 1k) vs 15 (under 1k aside from 4)

    50/50 of current instruments.

Historically bought significantly more used than I have new, but I have a much better idea of what I like these days so am looking for something specific rather than specifically a bargain. Some of the new instruments I’ve bought have wound up only marginally more expensive than used just due to sales.

In over 50 years I've only ever bought 1 brand new guitar.
So, yes, God Bless rich bastards.

OK, looking at my spreadsheet (I am a geek), 55% of all the guitars I've ever bought were new.... but 62% of the ones I've still got were bought used.

Although I've gradually moved up the price scale, most of my purchases the last few years have been used.  I've really gone off shiny new guitars.

    New: twice.  Both still retained.

Used: uncountable.  Most flipped. 2 definite 'Keepers'.  So far...

  • Of all the guitars I have kept only one is used.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

  • A couple of my early guitars, over 40 years ago, were used but I don't have them any more. Since then I've only purchased new guitars. All the guitars I currently own were purchased new. Well apart from a good Squier guitar that I rescued when I saw someone was throwing it away at a local tip, then I gave it to my daughters.
    It's not a competition.

  • That I currently own, nine were bought brand new, one was given to me (but was old) and the other eleven were bought second hand.
Of those that have since gone, three were brand new, the other six were second hand.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

Strat- new but modded so much it's hard to say
    Tele new
JM and Cabronita both partscasters so new, but not bought as "whole" guitars
CS336, SG and HD28 all used

I buy way more amps than guitars and they're all new apart from some 60s stuff.

My Faith electro was second hand, I think all my other guitars were new. Oh except a Hello Kitty Strat and an 81 Aria semi, both gifts.

  • 50/50 based on current guitars. My preference these days is used - new (US in particular) instruments are simply too expensive now.

Bought new 4 or 5 times in 25 years.  Plus one or two 'B' stock.  None cost more than £400, though.

    'Have about 7 used guitars.

  • I have 2 electrics & 1 Acoustic.
Partscaster- built from new parts (mostly)
    Gretsch- new
My Faith Acoustic was second hand.

    That was easy.

That said, this year I've bought (& subsequently sold) 6 second hand guitars.

The first Fender Stratocaster I bought, in 1979, was brand new and I still have it.  Gigged with it, recorded with it, love it.  I've bought plenty of used since then.  Funny thing is, wish I'd bought, say, a ten year old Strat in 1979...

    2 new 6 used

I bought a ric 330 new and a year later a used 360 which was slightly more money.

Also only 3 are from coda which is crazy as most of my gear since 1990 has come from them.

About 50% each way for me. I made a promise to myself last year that I'd only buy second hand guitars from now on and I've kept to it. Mostly because I've not bought any guitars.

The only guitars I've bought new that I've kept is the Goldtop - still don't know how much it cost me... long story...
