A mistake that any fool could make

One of my favourite guitars started life as a Harley Benton kit, and has been through a few transformations. It now has HSS Bare Knuckles and a korina top.

The only problem with this guitar has been that it always had a lot of background noise. I assumed it was single coils and no shielding (which I thought I might get around to one day). I'd even checked the wiring more than once but found no problems.

The pots were getting a bit scratchy, so I took the cavity cover off to spray some cleaner in the pots earlier today, and noticed that there was no earth running to the back of the tone pot. Having fixed the earth wire, the guitar is now silent, even with a single coil selected and the volume wound up while sitting in front of my computer.

So, if you think you have a wiring problem but can't see anything wrong, check again - you might just be as dumb as me.

You've done a great job on that kit though. You'd never know it's humble origins.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.
