So this will be my first partscaster build, an alder body strat, Allparts maple neck with rosewood board.

The body and neck are being supplied by @rexter and the pickups were ordered from @TheGuitarWeasel a few minutes ago.

This will be fun, given that I either cut off a limb or set myself alight every time I go near tools.

  • Contemplating ordering a few bits.

So what's the collective wisdom on screening or not screening pickup cavities and scratchplate? I've seen a few conflicting opinions scattered around the inter web on this.

Screening is essential with single coils. Copper tape is better than conductive paint in the cavities.

I prefer to keep the pickup cavities unscreened

I've screened a few. Never really seemed to make a difference. I even checked to make sure my connecting wires were actually connected and everything.

Decided in the end it was "meh"

  • So, one yes, one no and one meh!

    Overwhelming body of opinion  :)

Maybe a better question would have been what are the pros and cons of shielding?

Cons - it can be a right pain in the arse and copper tape is really bloody sharp!!

I never screen, sometimes the scratchplaes arrive screened.....I never have an issue with no screening, many big name guitars are not screened....

Don't bother doing the cavities. Just get an aluminium shield or copper tape the pickguard.

  • OK, so this looks like a case of building some experience of my own. I'll start unscreened and be prepared to screen if I think it's too noisy. Thanks for the replies all.
