Enjoyable comedy new and old

What's Hot
axisusaxisus Frets: 28337
So I'm ill, rare but I am. It's the one time I'm prepared to vegetate infront of the TV. Saw the new comedy The Windsors on Netflix, which I thought was a great fun piss take of the royal family. Next up the first two episodes of the IT crowd, surely one of the best sitcoms ever. I'd forgotten how funny they are. I think I'll probably work through the lot again. Finally put the tv on and it was the all time classic Red Dwarf episode, Back to reality. One of the best ideas of its day, a bit dated now but what a classic.

Watch Borderline and Fried on Netflix. Only 6 short episodes each (though Borderline has a second season on Channel 5 catch up).

If you have a slightly juvenile sense of humour then both will appeal!

  • The IT Crowd contained various direct lifts from Seinfeld, you can probably avoid the first series and definitely the last but the ones in between are worth watching. Julia Louise Dreyfus pops up again in Veep which is also worth watching for a bit.
My ‘sick’ movie is Groundhog Day.

I recently watched 'Colin's Sandwich' with Mel Smith, if anyone can remember it, on Youtube. Brilliant and recommended if you haven't had the pleasure before. -

Monty Python of course - bit of a mixed bag but the best bits are very good indeed.

    Fawlty Towers.

    Ripping Yarns.

    Porridge.

  • I enjoyed American Vandal on Netflix. It might have been funnier if I'd seen more of the "true crime" stuff it parodies, but it didn't particularly suffer from not knowing the genre that well.

I never liked Senfield at all. I didn't like ANY of the characters. Peep show is just too uncomfortable most of the time.

Simpsons and South Park are the best of the American stuff.

"Spaced" is great, probably worth a watch if available. (Various cheeky cultural references etc in the usual Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost manner.)

Frasier (earlier series) is another of my all time favourites. And the 3rd and 4th series of Blackadder (Hugh Laurie is one of the great unsung heroes of this series btw.)

Loved that show, very funny, weird and pretty dark, excellent.

Black books is a must watch and of course Father Ted.

  • My "sick movie" was the directors cut of Almost Famous ("Untitled") - I had chicken pox when I was 28 and watched it twice a day for 14 days. I get a bit itchy now when I see it on the telly.

Back on topic - The Day Today, Saxondale, even Upstart Crow is good if you like a bit of word-smithery .. a real return to form for Ben Elton imo. Like a Shakespearean Blackadder.

I didn't like Seinfeld at all years ago but as I've liked Black Books, Father Ted and the IT Crowd and realised that Graham Linehan based his career on following it's formula I've come to like the writing and , by more recent standards , it isn't as harsh as I remembered.
