What's Hot

Aware as I am that biscuits are a topic of significant interest to many tFBers, I would like to offer my latest thoughts on the subject.

  1. McVities Digestive Thins are excellent - both the milk and dark chocolate.
  2. If you find yourself in the Netherlands, see if you can pick up some StroopKoeken. Two very short biscuits stuck together with buttery syrup. Just a hint of cinnamon to the assemblage.
Feel free to add your own thoughts on any recent developments in the arena.

Not new, but the "vintage" option: a simple, regular digestive with a thick layer of butter (or equivalent spread). The heart attack special!

[standard trope] I don't usually like broken biscuits, but that looks proper tasty. [/standard trope]

I concur with all of the above.

tFB Tip: If you're lucky enough to be at Amsterdam airport, you often find that they have plates of free StroopKoeken samples in the duty free gift shops.

    Erm...

The only time luck comes into play at Schipol is the eternal question of whether you'll be taxiing for 4 minutes or 44 minutes.

I recommend finding a branch of Jumbo; a pack of ten big StroopKoeken is about £1.50.

in the good old days, our local farm supply place used to sell broken biscuits. Now they've had a fancy remodel to appeal more to the pony set they've gone all upmarket. No more jumbo bags of broken biccies for me :(. My diabetes will never forgive them.

  • Stroopwafel seem to be pretty common in the Netherlands and are making an inroad here ( stroopkoeken are related but not quite the same). The idea is to balance them over your hot drink for a few minutes so they go a bit gooey before eating.

I also had some Tim Tams for Xmas, not new but rarely spotted. The Tim Tam Slam ( using them as a chocolate straw) remains satisfying.

Have you noticed that a dry dog paw smells like a digestive biscuit?

This is incorrect. The Rich Tea is not a savoury item, and thus is not eligible for crackerhood.

Stroopwafels are also delicious, and can be found easily enough over here (at approximately 5x the price they are on Netherlands)

Also, if you're coeliac, mcvities do gluten free versions of their milk chocolate hobnobs, and they're excellent (and like their glutinous brethren stand up to a good tea dunking)

however, in 'murica what they call a biscuit is, so far as I can ascertain, a bread roll. The only reasoned and logical explanation for this that I have yet seen is that 'muricans be crazy.

The ones I have had have been a halfway house between a bread roll and a savoury scone.

They've been quite nice, but biscuits they are not.
