Commission sale.

Thinking of moving on my '04 Gibson Les Paul Standard plus. It's a lovely guitar but just too heavy for me now.

Any shops in the South East/South London area that do commission sales?

I’ve always been an advocate of commission sales - and have had many good experiences with them, such as with Mark @guitars4you.

By way of warning, I recently off-loaded a couple of items via a small shop and had the devil’s own job getting the money out of them. I’d have no hesitation doing it again through a larger, more established business - but wouldn’t deal with that particular business (at least as a seller) again.

Obviously I’m nowhere near you - so don’t know any of the shops - just make sure you choose wisely!

Guitar Sound in Chichester do commission sales (or have in the past).

I'm more West London but these are the ones I know of:

Guitar classics in Wandsworth.  Has a very low commission rate but probably not the highest footfall.

    New Kings Road Guitars.

    Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience.

You are potentially losing a big chunk of money with commission sale, but I do like the lack of hassle. I sold an expensive bass via the bass gallery and still made a profit on it.

I'm in the middle of that situation at the moment, we'll have to see how it goes.

A shop will normally get a lot more for it than you will in a private sale.

Charlie Chandler recently sold a 2010 R8 for me for £2450.  What would I have got in a private sale?  Maybe £1800.

Timely thread, I was thinking about this yesterday.

I really should get shot of some guitars this year (as I say every year) but if this forum has achieved one thing it's to make me afraid of selling on eBay....

Presumably somewhere like Charlie Chandler's would be more interested in handling high-end stuff than, say, Epis and PRS SEs?

#MeToo - a couple of years ago, at a small shop run by a lovely chap in East Anglia. Basically, the cash that comes in when they sell is treated as normal cashflow and gets diverted to wherever. Then, when you want your money, the shop panics and makes you wait until the cashflow allows for it.

    Makes for some awkward conversations.

(Was same when I sold a car on commission at a specialist dealer.)

Yes, make sure you pick a dealer that's still solvent, remember what happened at Vintage & Rare a few years back...and on the other side of the globe at Jacksons Rare Guitars.

Worst case scenario is that the shop sells your guitar and goes bust, leaving you at the end of a long queue of creditors.

I had a feeling that was probably the situation, would rather they just came out and said it.

Absolutely my experience. Decent higher end guitars will always sell for a higher price at stores with an outstanding reputation, often where pros shop. Even after commission you often still get at least as much as you would from a private sale but without the hassle and stress.

A shop that sold a Santa Cruz guitar for me did unfortunately go bust very shortly afterwards but they made sure I got my money within days of the sale before creditors grabbed everything (HMRC always first in line). Top blokes.

They’ll sell epis and se’s!... they have folk looking for cheaper guitars!... they had my partscaster tele up in there!!!!!

You won’t have any issue with money either... he does have a “cooling off” period just in case the buyer returns the guitar for any reason but you get paid via bank transfer exactly when he says he will pay you!... totally hassle free tbh!...

Thank you!  I think I may pay them a visit next time I have a day off.

Pick a shop with a good website/social media presence and good footfall. New Kings Rd rarely update theirs and their guitars are always priced sky high. Charlie has a busy shop but his website and pics are last century and his FB page is sparse. Guitar Classics have a rarely updated website too. Sorry not much help.....send it to Mark @guitars4you :)
