I like daveww's the best, although they're all good.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

As I'd consider it very bad form to vote for my own (mine's the first one, under my real name) but I'd still like to exercise my democratic rights ...

... my vote would be Jezzlemming - nicely played.

(with an honourable mention for Branshen's tap-dancing camel percussion and excellent photo) :)

I'd like to vote as well.  Annoyingly  ;) I'll have to go with Jezzlemming as well......  I like it at around 40 sec's where it does sort of capture the Malian desert blues sound.  The others are good too but I think Jezzlemming gets a bit more of the right mood.

First up, congrats to everyone who managed to get something together to contribute to this, if you're not used to strange random genres and deadlines it can be a bit daunting! So regardless of who wins, well done chaps :) Like them all, but only get one, so...

My vote is going to steamabacus, really nice percussive looped bits with some very nice single lines on top.

  • My vote is for the piece by daveww.

Impressed that all the entries captured the mood of a pretty tricky genre.. I wouldn't have known where to even begin!

steamabacus' riff sounded the most authentic to me, you can feel the grit of the desert sand! So steamabacus gets my vote on this one. All good entries though.

jazzlemming for me closely followed by steamabacus. JL sounded more authentic.

Firstly, hasn't home recording come a along way?  I mean seriously, all of these are way better recorded than anything bands I was in managed to get done in small recording studios of old.

Listened to 'em all a couple of times while faffing about.

    Steamabacus +1

    Wow.

IMHO, none of these would be out of place on a "proper" commercial recording.  Impressive work, all.

Quality of jazzlemmings playing is stunning, but daveww gets my vote for being more like most of the Malian style stuff that I've heard, as well as being a brilliant piece in its own right.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.
