Oh dear....Ive been fitting Led since it came out....and it has improved loads, you need to shop around for the right stuff.

The "nice" ones for the home are 3000k warm colour , maybe 3500K.....garages, sheds, lofts, sometimes kitchens & bathrooms...4000K, these will give you a bright sparkle off reflective surfaces.

In Florescent equivalent, there are no twin lamp / single lamp any more, just wattage and colour, EG a typical 5ft twin ( 116w) is replaced easily by a 50W Led 4000K.

We do high end residential, shops, supermarkets, student accommodation.....all totally Led, a typical supermarket refit with Led saves them circa 20k per year, lifespan 5-6years, payback 2-3 years.

Like it or not....you can hoard as many tungsten lamps as you like...

I did find twenty or so 100w incandescent bulbs while clearing out my mum's house

Maybe I should put them up for sale here...

And not forgetting the lucrative relic market ......  speaking of which, i’ve got a couple of lightbulbs that have ‘true relic’ status, and another that doesn’t work, but looks the dogs bolx - it’s even got those hanging filament ends you only see when the bulb has expired. Cool, eh?

I have tried LED bulbs. Compared to incandescent, they're shit.
If you do nothing else buy one 13w Philips 2700k warm white led bulb and then tell me it's not as good as an incandescent bulb. And I have been very very anti low energy bulbs for years.

It's instantly on, the colour temp is very close and it's at least 10% brighter than a 100w incandescent.

If it was me I'd go for 2400k or 2500k but they don't make them in 100w equivalent yet. They do in 40w equivalent which will be fine for accent lighting

    I'm only interested in vintage.

Scratch them and scuff them up a bit. I like my vintage light bulbs to look authentic...

My bedroom studio contains a Kemper amp and a Philips Hue coloured lighting system. Not only does it look good and sound great, it also makes me very green. I am the future of music!
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

You should work out a way to hook up the lights to the Kemper output and have them react to your playing.

    The newer LEDs are great.
But I've not had any luck when it comes to replacing 12v halogen downlighters. 12v LEDs come as either constant voltage or constant current (it says) and you need a matching transformer - my transformers don't match and the bulbs are either way too bright and clearly will die quickly - or flicker like a strobe - or just glow feebly..
So then I thought I'll swap fittings and go to mains - but the sizing is not the same. Anyone know best solution?

These Philips Sceneswitch bulbs are particularly nice. They are three-stage dimmable by turning them off and on again.  The dimmest setting is a very nice warm hue.  The brightest of the three stages is suitable to read by.  The only downside I've found with Philips LEDs is their 15 year life expectancy is wishful thinking.

I went from 12v Halogen to 240 volt LED (standard GU10 replacement LED). I changed the fittings without any issues - I used the Aurora brand which were actually sold with standard halogen  240 volt GU10.
I prefer using recessed spots (bathroom ceiling is quite low) and at that time I struggled to find a dedicated LED fitting that was recessed so I simply put LED GU10s in a mains recessed fitting. It works well (Philips Core Pro). Colour temp and brightness are indistinguishable from 35watt Halogen but I have had reliability issues with them. In my other bathroom i did the same thing but with another brand of lamp, no reliability issues.

I'm assuming specialist bulbs like that will still be allowed - there are other applications where nothing other than an incandescent is suitable as well, like oven lights - due to the temperature they have to withstand.

Either that or someone will come up with a unit that contains an LED bulb and a heater.

Pop 'em in the freezer for a bit - they'll be worth double for 'cryogenic'.

I'm think most people's sleep patterns are probably more disrupted by their smartphones than street lighting too...
Gotta rise to that. I don't have a smartphone, and my sleep patterns are disrupted more by waking up needing a pee than by street lights. And our street lights are better than they used to be (the light is directed down to the road not allowed to spread into bedroom windows) ... BUT: I still say I'd sleep better without them. So I'm just one for whom the statement isn't true ;)
