Here's the 44th Riff of the Month (RotM) Challenge, being run by @stratman3142 and @TTony.

The challenge is now open, and remains open for submissions until 11:30pm on 23rd June 2018

All you have to do is ...
Write a riff. You can include whatever else you want in the mix, but the main focus must be on the riff. Most entries will probably be guitar based riffs, but they don't have to be.
Keep it to a maximum of 50 seconds. This is about riffs, not songs.

Send your entry (as an mp3) to riffs@theFB.co.uk
Include your forum name in the email.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline of 23rd June 2018, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
Voting will end on 11.30pm 30th June 2018
The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends. If there are 8 or more entries, then the order and scores of those in the top half will be announced.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used.

Riff sent. Short and to the point. And less heavy than last month.

    But still heavy.

Just checking. Your entry isn't in my emails. Is it still on it's way?

Limiting to remove high transients helps. I use Voxengo Elephant as my master limiter which is excellent and my favourite, but there are cheaper and free alternatives you could investigate as well.

I have that... although I have just been using the limiter in logic. How are you setting the limiter up? According to the meters innoigic I’m bang on 0db but it just seems quiet in comparison, admittedly I don’t know that much about mixing and mastering :)

In Voxengo Elephant I set the 'Out gain' to about -0.5dB, then crank up the 'In gain' to give effect I'm looking for the particular track.

I use George Yohng's W1 limiter which is a free waves 1 limiter clone as the last step in my master channel. I keep the channel slider at 0dB. I set it the limiter to - 0.7 dB limit with adaptive release then tweak the volume so that some transients might be limited but it doesn't sound compressed. It's easy to tell when you overdo it as it sounds horrible.

    Thomas Mundt's Loudmax 64 (free):

    https://loudmax.blogspot.com/2018/04/loudmax-plugin-v121-released.html?m=1

I set the threshold to -3.5 and the output to -0.5, this is after an SSL bus comp clone on the master bus to add some light (2:1) compression and a fair bit (around 6db) of makeup gain.
