    @HarrySeven have you ever been into acoustic or just always electrics,? I honestly can't imagine not loving acoustic,  although when I started Learning in the mid 90s I always thought acoustics were starter guitars which then led into electrics! But now I realise it's the other way round .. For me :)

    From the collected posts of Lord Seven, I detect just the faintest suggestion that he may have taken up guitar during the Punk Rock era. The young Seven will also have been steeped in the West Midlands rock music tradition. Electric, amplified and how!

    Be seeing you.

    @Strangefan - Sadly, no...never, ever...I've always thought they weren't for me. Don't like the look, sound, anything (and it's not for want of trying...I've owned loads, but they never stay long).

    @Funkfingers - You disingenuous devil! ;)

    The somewhat vacuous-looking younger me (below, in period band promo pic) was indeed a product of Callaghan and Thatcher's Britain.

    I never learned to play on an acoustic and gravitated towards and electric...the Punk thing got me into raucous stuff from day one - and I've never felt the need to diversify. ;)

    I had an LP copy with Maya on the headstock in 1983. It wasn't bad, but I moved it on when I got a real LP
    I had one at the same time. Mine was white with 3 gold coloured pick ups. weighed a fair bit but sorry i didn't keep it .

    Mine was likewise. However once I got my wine red std I just didn't play the Maya so I let it go. If I could play that guitar again today you never know I might like it but I've got others that I'd play a lot more.

    I found an old 1980/81 review of a couple of Maya electrics ( no acoustics unfortunately). They were pretty much generic Japanese copies ( Srat and Tele ) which I would suspect were branded for the distributor rather than having any deep heritage. As a guide the strat and and tele listed at £118 and £105 respectively while to give it some context a baseline Hondo bolt neck LP was £98 , while a Yamaha SG2000 was £629 ( those were the days ! ). I suspect that, as @Aligorie has alluded to, the majority, if not all would have been decent playable laminate guitars as per the likes of the Kasuga brand, which also had a great line of Martin and Gibson styled acoustics at a budget.

    Hi. New member/poster, so please be gentle.
     I own several Maya guitars & think I have one similar to your Gibson query. I'll try to attach some snaps that I hastily grabbed. Hope this is of help. Please feel free to ask anything at all about my guitars.

    Hi KDS. Glad that the pics finally got through. I have owned that Maya since January 2011. I bought it on evilbay from a seller in ... (it's been a while) Devon, or somewhere down in that there South ;-) It was a female seller that was the only previous owner I believe. I do have her name from the correspondence that we had, but you will understand that I cannot make such details public here.  Please let me know if there's anything else that I can try to help with. Cheers.

    PS. HarrySeven is a very good researcher. My earlier contribution was this (top of page two). http://www.guitarsite.com/discussion/messages/23680.shtml?page=1  cough. cough.
    Opinions may have changed/developed since then, but my two pennorth says, Maya Japan are overlooked, underrated & worth a punt for pocket money prices. At best we are talking very very serious quality woods & tone, name notwithstanding. Also occasionally made of plywood/ bamboo :-) but still a hoot. Just saying, never get hung up with names.

    I had a Maya Martin copy a few years ago, quite a nice guitar. Some of the Maya acoustics can be really good.

    I picked up one that I would describe as Martin-ish a couple of weeks ago. I reckon D-35 style? 1970's, fine quality. Nitro finish. Solid spruce Goldilocks top (not too thick, not too thin) solid rosewood 3 piece back, ebony board, abalone purfling (but very discrete). Solid mahogany neck. Mahogany sides might be laminate, but it is very hard to see and I don't get hung up on lam v solid sides too much. The nut is an aftermarket brass one that I believe is meant for a Les Paul, but so what. It has almost infinite individual string height adjustment and hey, it's brass  :)  Pictures are here
