All Along the watchtower playing as they leave Kilburn in a Jag ! Jimi would have been proud if it was used as a music video

We still quote “you’ve got to help us, we’ve come on holiday by mistake!” during most holiday or trips away. It’s a classic film.

But his family weren't.. pretty sure I read somewhere that this convinvco them to get back the rights to his music as they didn't like all the drug association it constantly got..

I tend to agree it probably hasn't held up that well if you didn't see it in the 80s, but it really was a beacon of light in that artistic desert of a decade, as was anything else which credited the consumer with a bit of intelligence.

I haven't seen it since, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit clunky by modern standards.
Ah 1987 - the paragon of film virtue. Not.

There were some classics that year. Lethal Weapon.. Predator.. Full Metal Jacket..

But in the edgy comedy and biting alternative humour? Good Morning, Vietnam, Maybe.... that’s about it tho.
I think this has held up much better (don't get me wrong, those are some great films) but the lack of special effects and Mel Gibson and explosions means the film doesn't look so dated and the script is a strong script regardless of time.

One thing that irritated me about it is that the Jag could have been no more than ten years old in 1969, and wouldn’t have been anywhere near that ratty and rusty.

There’s about 4 on that list that if I saw them come into the telly I might consider watching. The rest, no chance.

You can’t come on and have a pythonesque jibe because someone has said 87 was a good film year after listing the Witches of Eastwick..

If Richard E Grant's character had been the owner then I think it's entirely likely that it could look like that. It had just lived through the 60's. :s

That was meant to be a joke ;)... although no film with Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer in it can be *all* bad :).

It must be me, but I just didn’t get it at all. I hadn’t seen it until a year or two ago - found it on DVD in a charity shop and thought it would be great since it’s always mentioned as a ‘must see’. But I found it slightly contrived, not that funny and largely pointless.

I can see why it’s a ‘cult’ film and it’s maybe better if you saw it back in the day and re-watch it to the point you know the lines, but I honestly can’t be bothered - it went back to the charity shop. MrsICBM felt the same, and she usually likes Richard E. Grant...
I watched it again a year or so ago and would say that it really hasn't stood the test of time. What was hilarious at the time simply wasn't that funny more recently. Mrs9000 hadn't seen it before and, like MrsICBM, didn't really get it.

Comedy is very much a product of its time and, quite often, doesn't really work for people who missed it the first time around. Mrs9000 is eight years younger than me and, i guess, that makes a whole lot of difference to how she views a film like this.

Another 'cult' film I rewatched recently was Dark Star (1974). Apart from the elevator scene it really wasn't very funny at all.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it
