Good call on Pelican & Earth.

The first two Pelican albums are two of my favourites for the post rock/post metal genre, the riffing brings me great joy.

I used to listen to a lot of Dave Holland stuff years ago, accessible modern jazz I guess. I also went through a David Sylvian stage, not instrumental but his voice is so laid back it's almost another ambient instrument. I listen to a lot of 70s dub like King Tubby which has very little singing so I guess that's my current equivalent.

One of my guitar heroes is Sonny Sharrock. His work was not all instrumental but if you get the Ask the Ages album that is and probably the peak of his career; imagine Fast Eddie Clarke sitting in with be bop musicians. But better.

And, of course, you should play lots of Derek Bailey. You won't find that at all distracting. You can thank me later.

This is amazing - I'm working my way through them

    > Got Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock Joe Satriani and Hank Marvin in my CD collection, as well as a signed version of Chris Squire's 'Fish Out of Water' for the YES fans among us!

    > Really enjoyed Ozrich, Bill Frisell and Loren Connors (Wow for the latter! Great thinking music!!)

    > Love Pat Metheny and I wish I had an 8 hour mix of his stuff, as I especially love 'Third Wind'

    > Currently listening to the basslines on 'Moon Safari'  :)

Thank you guys - I've nearly finished my bid now

Lots of jazz rock / fusion stuff from the 70's and 80's:
    Mahavishnu Orchestra
    Brand X
    Bruford
    King Crimson (some vocals)
    Jeff Berlin
Allan Holdsworth (some earlier stuff has vocals)

For more rock guitar instrumentals try Jan Cyrka's solo albums and Geoff Whitehorn's two (some vocals), if you can find them.

  • I came here to suggest Russian Circles and Pelican. Wisdom awarded to @BloodEagle ;
I’ll throw in Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster- I’m WELL aware of Drew’s “divisive” personality, but I think his musical output is rather impressive.
