OK, you Rockabilly Cats - Formula for 6th chords is 1 3 5 6, so in C major that's C E G A. Common in rockabilly, early jazz and in straight ahead jazz as a resolution from the false suspension of a Imaj7 chord at the end of a II V I progression, eg |Dmmaj7 Dm7 |G7sus4 G7 |Cmaj7 |Cmaj6 |

Here are all the open-position 6th chords I can think of -

A6: x02222
Bb6: x10333
B6: x21404
C6: x32210
D6: xx0202
Eb6: xx1013
E6: 022120
F6: 103231 (Play 6th string with thumb)
G6: 320000

What other ways of playing 6th chords using open strings can you come up with?

If anyone's even remotely interested, major 6th chords are inversions of minor 7th chords i.e. C6 (C E G A) uses the same notes as Am7 (A C E G) so are interchangeable - just gives a slightly different flavour to things. (Takes off nerd hat.)
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • I sometimes wish I knew a bit more chord theory... maybe that should be, any chord theory at all?
I learned the basic majors, minors, sevenths, and some Major 7ths and diminisheds to make myself sound a bit jazzy and clever... but since I have been writing songs all my special chords write themselves as and when needed along with the cut and colour of the song... perhaps these are all in a book somewhere.
I confess there are times when can hear the sound I need in a song but cannot identify the chord type that will achieve it; that is when a more structured knowledge of chords could be a bonus.

    I like to play a Bb6 with an open G string, e.g.

    x 1 3 0 3 x

    or

    6 8 8 0 6 x

    I tend to play G6 as 322000.
