  • I had a Lightning head and 1 x 12 Matchless cab for years - loved the way it cut through a band mix but on its own it was a hard, bright sound that was very hard to tame! However, I've played many more at World Guitars over the years and found some to sound very different, the combos with reverb always sounded far more forgiving to the head/cab combo.

Some of the matchless combo's weights are definitely not forgiving though. Lightening is not too bad though

I did a gig last year playing Les Paul > Fuzz Face clone > Lightning. The fuzz stayed on the whole time, I just rode the volume controls on the guitar. Simple setup, sounded brilliant. Here's a shocking pic (the Tele stayed on the stand as a spare).

Another stellar sound for this afternoon’s BBC Introducing session...how have I lived without one of these amps for so long?....I think I need another!

So far a Telecaster, a Junior and a Special all sound spectacular through it. Would be interested to try a 1x12 version next to the 2x10 just to see if there’s any major difference.

  • These don't have an FX loop do they?

These don't have an FX loop do they?
No, and it’s fairly pointless even on the models that do have one because the master volume is post-phase-inverter, so the loop can’t be after the distortion. They don’t really have enough gain to need it anyway.

    Really @ICBM even the HC30/DC30?

Yes, all of them use a PPIMV. (Not certain about the more modern models, but all the classic ones do.) That means the distortion is mostly generated by the phase inverter, hence is after the FX loop - so there’s no real difference compared to putting the effects in front of the amp.

The loop is also very crude, unbuffered, and uses a TRS jack so it’s a faff to connect - I’m not sure why they even bothered!

That's very good to know. Thanks

If I am running pedals into my Lightning, I usually have the Volume (i.e. Gain) set to no more than light crunch.

@ICBM Is that the case for AC30s too?
