L.A. studio ace and much-recorded bass player Max Bennett passed away 14th September at the ripe old age of 90.
He started his career as a jazz bassist playing upright with the likes
of Stan Kenton and is on many 50s and early 60s jazz dates. There is a
superb LP by saxophonist Charlie Mariano - "Alto Sax For Young Moderns"
with Bennett and Mel Lewis on bass and drums.
He moved to electric bass for 60s sessions and was an 'A' list studio
musician, playing on a huge number of sides by Sinatra, Streisand, Ray
Charles, Elvis, the Beach Boys, Carole King, the Monkees, the Partridge
Family and many, many more - as well as being the bassist on Zappa's
epic 'Hot Rats' LP.
He joined Tom Scott's L.A. Express and toured in that ensemble backing
Joni Mitchell ("Miles Of Aisles"); he was also first call for many TV
and movie soundtracks.
Quite a career.
Max Bennett R.I.P.
