I believe it takes some of the other coil that's shut down when coil tapping. So stops it sounding too weedy. That's the best I can describe it anyway. Lol

A coil split is when you take the two joined wires that are not used on a 4 wire pickup, and attatch to Ground / Earth via a switch, which gives you a thinner single coil sound. 

sometimes this sound can be too thin to use, so using a Capacitor and a Resistor (wired in paralell, as I have) beefs up the Split (or as some call it, Tapped) sound. It's really usefull mod. Using different value Capacitors and resistors will help shape that "Tuned" sound. Hope this helps.
