This is the 42nd solo of the Month (SotM) Challenge.

The challenge is now open, and remains open for submissions until 11:30pm on 23rd November 2018.

Here's this month's backing track (you can download it from soundcloud). Record your solo over the top of it and then submit it (ideally in mp3 format) to solos@theFB.co.uk
Also, feel free to comment on how you approached the solo, which will add a bit more interest and maybe we can learn something from each other.

Discussion: This track is kindly provided by @poopot based on one of his previous RotM entries.

Below are the details: @poopot can correct me if I've got anything wrong
Track Title: Dirtydirtydirty
Tempo: 110 bpm
Chords: E7 going to A9 for the bridge

The backing track has 5dB of headroom to add your solos. Add your solo and (as a guideline) try to avoid boosting the overall level beyond that if possible. That way the entries should be at roughly the same level and we won't get into loudness wars.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point. The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends. If there are 8 or more entries, then the order and scores of those in the top half will be announced.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used for the solo:

    With apologies for pedantry...

    The Hendrix chord is E7#9.

    Sounds like A7 not A9.

With apologies for more pedantry, I recall a debate where it's apparently more correct to refer to it as E7b10...

    This is the shape:

At the 7th, little bit of sliding from the 6th to the 7th... maybe adding a pinky finger here and there... then up to the 12th for the bridge bit...

this is what the guitar is doing:

So it's E9 and  A9...you could have just said that

But who cares? We'll all just end up using Em pentatonic anyway

  • Done mine. I'll start a playlist when we get another entry. Meanwhile, in keeping with the trend that was started last month, here's a video.

  • Right, I've got 2 different style versions for my entry and I can't decide which to submit.  What's the etiquette in this situation?
    - one is a straightforward lead piece with a little hook
    - the other i was experimenting with backwards recordings!

  • Mix them together! Maybe pan the reverse bits over a bit and add swathes of delay and reverb.

Hmm, it already sounds enough of a mess as it is lol ;)

You could submit two entries. Make sure you give the entries some sort of title or number so there's no confusion in the voting.

    It's not a competition.

  • Thanks.  After reflecting on both versions for a while I've settled on the one I hate the least and will submit that.  Unlikely to get me any votes this month lol ;)

  • Submitted.  I found this one really hard to find a story in the backing track.  I tried clean, bluesy, dirty, saturation and in the end I just went backwards, literally.

I had an idea for how I wanted it to sound backwards, so I had to learn to play it in reverse, record it forwards and then reverse the recording.  Sounds messy, and is!

My composition is in 4 passes:

1 - a backwards passage, played forwards but reversed for the track
    2 - a forwards passage, a melodic interlude
3 - dual guitars, I recorded playing this twice separately, they don't line up perfectly but I liked that
4 - another forwards passage, a melodic (outer) interlude

I'm almost certain that when @poopot recorded the backing, that this lead was exactly what he had in mind.
