(In other words there is no 'best' solo, only very good solos that add something extra to what is already a good song)

Love Gary Moore, Like the solo in that it is not a shredder, but debatably not his best guitar solo.

I am not a big Van Halen fan, but I remember seeing this the first time end really enjoying it, feel with technical wizardry and much better than the album version. Solo at 4:12

  • Off the top of my head, I can't decide between two, which are:

Larry Carlton's solo in Kid Charlemagne
Nuno Bettencourt's solo in Get The Funk Out

    ...oh and another one
Billy Gibbons - My Old Blue Jeans

I'll stop there, because the more I think about it, the more spring to mind.

    It's not a competition.

I think Gilmour's solo on Time is probably the best crafted solo I can think of ..... just perfect for the song and so expressive.

In a different  way  Eddies solo on Beat it is also perfect for the song, just so aggressive sounding

How could I forget that one. Add that to my list. An absolute masterpiece of phrasing, technique, feel and expression. It still makes the hairs on my arms stand on end listing to it again.

Also, my favourite rock album of all time.

Correct, and remember how out-of-this-worldy that solo sounded when you first heard it? It was just magical. It was like a new music had been created. It always makes me think of cathedrals, I don’t know why.

  • Both lead sections of this, the intro and the 'solo' (they're virtually identical, just slight differences to the phrasing).

    Absolute perfection:

Also this live version of Need Your Love So Bad always gets the hairs on the back of the neck standing up, even more so than the original version...

    Solo @ 3:27

I don’t know about best, but one of the most original and mind blowing solos I heard which had a huge impact on me was Fripp on Bowie’s Fashion.
