I've ended up with a quartermaster and it's been bullet proof.
Used prices are really good too
Everything else has been bomb proof though
Slow in what sense, switching between patches/banks? I've not had any issues with mine in that regard. Obviously they're built to a price in terms of features/aesthetics, but I'm about a year into owning one with no issues to date. No heavy gigging, but used at home, in a church band, and in the pit band for a panto run earlier this year.
Not sure where you hang out, but if budget is a greater consideration than poshness, you'd be welcome to have a play with mine for a real-world experience. Based in Herts, but will be at the Quad jam later this month. Wasn't planning on taking the big board, but if you're going to be there I could sling it in the car.

Definitely offers more flexibility than the gig rig
