Looking for warm vocal mic up to around £500

As above - my voice is like nails on a proverbial.  All suggestions welcome!  RE20 is in the running, maybe the Neumann TLE 102

You can't go too far wrong with a Shure SM7B.

Shure KSM9 is a great mic, one on eBay at a good price (no association with seller)

    Define 'warm'.

No mic in the world will make a bad voice sound good and you cannot spend your way into fixing that but it is more important to find something that suits your voice.
It could be that an RE20 suits you really well when a Neumann U87 doesn't.
You won't know until you try it.

Rode K2 is a good 'budget' valve mic.
So is a Mojave Audio MA-50.

    Also consider your range.
    I use a
Audio-Technica AT4033 on higher pitched male voices all the time, but I'd not make it my first choice for a low pitched voice.

Find a good dealer in your area, ask to audition a bunch of them.

Cool thanks for the suggestions - I'll see if I can try some of these out. I've used Neumanns in sessions in the past and I used an RE20 recently which I was reasonably happy with.

  • I got an AKG C214 and find the vocals record really warm sounding and very good quality. It was just €260 on Thomann, free shipping as well at that price I think. It has great reviews. Might be something you can look into!

Miktek MK300 could be a good option. Really nice warm sounding mic and very reasonably priced.

I'm a big fan of the EV RE20, which you've already got experience of so I won't wax lyrical. The main issue with it is that with some voices, it brings out quite a lot of sibilance in the lower treble - 6 or 7k. When an RE20 doesn't work, an SM7 usually does the trick.

An alternative - the Coles 4038 is an *incredible* vocal mic - almost always needs a treble lift, but it takes EQ incredible well thanks to a total lack of resonances in the upper range.

Cheers for the suggestions guys.  Tried a 414b ULS today and it was bloody lovely, suited my voice right off the bat.  Didn't realise there were different types of 414s
