Distorted audio on homebrew dvd

My mate has filmed a charity gig he played at, recently. Made a movie in iMovie. It looked and sounded great on his macbook, but when he's played the dvd through his tv set up, the picture is perfect, but the audio sounds, in his words, shitty and distorted..
I think he's just played the iMovie file on the macbook, not the burned dvd.. Is it as he's burned the dvd, the audio signal is too strong..? Something like that? something else?

so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.
