I find I simply become more intolerant of the nonsense "modern" ideas ,definitions of what is "racist" ,"sexist" " ableist" etc etc
I also cannot tolerate these silly made up modern names for things , militant Vegans, Americanised merged words like "Brangelina" or "Momager"  ,"Brexit" etc etc or modern "made-up" so called "crimes" like calling somebody a name on the internet ........grow up
I am not interested in Transgender issues although I am a free thinker and wish them well ;I just don't think it is newsworthy
I am not interested in "Me too "........beyond the obvious  crimes is the pathetic stampede of attention seekers .
Especially annoying is the attitude of younger people and millennials who think it's acceptable to be rude in their critique of older generations and their wisdom..........when I was young there were grumpy old gits in the office with lower qualifications but you bit your lip when they had a go at you out of respect for their age .It was called being brought up properly.
Far too much opinion and influence from young ,wet -behind -the-ears people who seem to think they are entitled to critique older generations.......just rude and ill-mannered with low moral value upbringing.
I'm not glad I'm old but I'm glad I come from a time when people had a bit more metal and gumption about them.
I sincerely hope that’s satire because if not could you be any more the stereotypical grumpy old intolerant man? With attitudes like that is there any wonder you fail to get respect from the younger generation?

Why should age, just of itself, be worthy of respect? Sure, you have more life experiences but it’s how you use those experiences that counts. Do those two pensioners who just got caught drug smuggling deverve respect? What about the millions of pensioners who voted for Brexit, putting their own short-term selfish desires above the dreams and aspirations of the younger generation?

The state the world we live in today is entirely the result of the actions of middle aged white men. No wonder young people look around them and think, what a monumental fuck up. Good on them for being critical.

The irony of your post of course is that it’s precisely the baby boomer generation (which I’m assuming you’re from) who literally had everything handed to them on a plate - free education, job security, good pensions, easy route on to the housing ladder, decent return on investments etc, etc. Young people today have none of that to look forward to. And yet from your position of privilege you can only criticise them for not having enough respect.

Perhaps the reason you respected the generation before you is because they actually deserved it - they won a war. Let’s face it, you were always going to come up short against that.

Eyesight - you'll find that timing varies a lot, but that seems to be a very common change circa 50yrs

    So ....

    eyesight deteriorated - tick

arthritis in hands - tick  (sadly poor guitar technique related - lazy thumb, and too many barre chords - trying to remember to place thumb parallel to the neck)

arthritis in (one) foot - tick

Night-time cramps, especially in the shins - FML it is painful - a friend suggested a couple of squares of 70+% dark chocolate per day - this seems to have had some effect .... we'll see.

    Should add ...

Hair used to be of brillo pad texture, goes all silky & whispy as it goes grey and hence thinning noticeably

Type 2 diabetes - managed with drugs

Bullshit tolerance at all time low
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Its pretty clear from his post its the assumption of respect for age rather than having earned respect.  I agree entirely.

  • Actually not too bad for 54. Lost most of my hair - though little grey in what is left. Got more serious about my health about 4 years ago and have lost a lot of weight through eating less and exercising more. I still need to loose more - but blood pressure is normal and I have a low resting heart-rate. I no longer smoke and don’t generally drink anywhere near as much as I used to.

Based on three-score years and ten - I’ve got 16 years left. I find that a terrifying number - I try very hard not to think about it....

Beyond 50 you can no longer take good health for granted.  There are some things that you can't do much about.  Failing eyesight, hearing loss (if it's hereditary rather than due to noise exposure), baldness etc, but there are things that you can do to mitigate the effects of ageing.

I got a bit of a yellow card at 50 when I was feeling the effects of stress (I was left to pick up the pieces on the project from hell).  The Doctor sent me for various tests but, as a precaution, prescribed me a Nitro-glycerine spray.  When I Googled it I discovered that this is only prescribed for angina.  Fortunately I didn't have angina but I remember thinking - I'm 50 years old, I take no exercise, I'm overweight, I drink too much and my diet is shit - who's fault would it be, other than my own, if I did have angina?

Whilst I'm not exactly ready to take on a Triathlon I am fitter at 55 than I was at 45.

The nice surprise when you turn 55 is that you get invited to take part in the bowl cancer screening programme which involves having an endoscope shoved up your back passage.  I've also had endoscopy via my throat (hopefully not the same endoscope)  and via my third eye when I had a kidney stone.  Triple violation! (which could be a good name for a Prog Rock band?)

FFS.  I'm 66.  We just moved and I spent a weekend carrying fucking heavy boxes up three floors, putting up curtain rails, humping stuff about in the garden, doing my day job, being nice to all and sundry, and all I go was a bit of stiffness in my lower back for a morning.
OK, I get a bit of tennis elbow - not at the moment mind - and I'm a bit creaky; not as fit as I would like to be but far fitter than I thought I was (see above reference to boxes). I've always had body hair.  My eyesight is good thanks to laser surgery. I have high blood presuure, controlled with drugs, and modern life pisses me right off but

    I'm alive
I don't have to keep peeing in the middle of the night
Down there still functions perfectly - although the opportunities are fewer than they were
I have a healthy disrepect for all authority and people "looking out" for me
I enjoy my relationship with my hairdresser and my physiotherapist

    What's not to like.

Save a cow.  Eat a vegetarian.

When you walk into B&Q, look up at the screens and the crown of you head looks like a monkeys arse. Bad knees, crunchy painful thumb on picking hand, long balls, nose hair like a thicket and wrinkles that look like they are carved in. Other than that im still bloody gorgeous.

    54 and... OK really.

I've got type 2 diabetes which upset me - a lot - when it was diagnosed eight years ago, but it's well under control and I don't worry about it at all any more.  Somewhat plagued by IBS but I'm sure many have it worse.  I had a frozen shoulder a couple of years ago but it went away on its own.  I feel like my body's not as "springy" as it used to be but it doesn't cause any actual problems.

Other than that... still got my hair, no grey.  Teeth OK.  Not fat.  Never spent a night in hospital.  I don't have time to take enough exercise so I worry that'll hit me soon... but fingers crossed.  Keep on trucking.
At least you can get prescription Viagra
I gather you get 8 a month however that is 9 too many for me at my age

I balance the loosening effect of the Metformin with the tightening effect of the Codeine for the dodgy back and knees. It seems to achieve the right consistency.

They can be rigid or flexible. Neither are what you would call leisure pursuits.

What I find unnerving about getting older is my growing intolerance of the cold. Up to the age of about 50 the cold really didn't have too much of an effect on me. Since then, it's been like my internal thermostat has gone haywire

I used to have IBS before the diabetes diagnosis, then it vanished after I changed my diet, lost weight, started doing more exercise etc.  It's come back the last couple of years, which I put down to no longer having time to do any exercise.

I never seemed to have any Metformin side-effects, but maybe I am getting them now... I'll try the peppermint oil, thanks.
