It might just sound loud in the bathroom because of the acoustics in there, you need to look at anything and everything electronic, look at anything in the plumbing too, boiler, water softener, you would be surprised how sound can travel, especially high pitched squeeky noises.

Something is cycling every 30 seconds, got a mechanical timer anywhere? CH pump? Pumped shower? I would be all over the loft.

Yeah  i did read that. But the sound sounds very much like it's coming from the ceiling fan, which could mean it's the fan itself or something in the roof space. There is a duct from the fan to the roof vent though, which you would think would dull the sound somewhat. With my head in the roof space I can hear it but not as much.

Hmmmm. Hadnt thought about the plumbing. I'm going to turn off the mains and see if it Fucks off

Right. I turned the mains off and went up in the loft. Stood above where it was loudest in the en suite and could still hear it with mains off. But then frequency started to get longer. And then it stopped!! Wife turned mains back on and I waited.....But still nothing! Has whatever it was discharged itself?

I'm dubious about whether I've solved it as it did stop last night, then started 2am ish

It wouldn't work on my Dad (92) his fridge freezer has an alarm if the temp. drops too low (he'd left the door open slightly) and he couldn't hear it when he was standing next to the fridge.

I agree with those who say battery-powered smoke or monoxide detector. 

The device may not actually be fitted in a working position. It could still be in its original packaging, inside another container such as a packing crate from when you moved in.
