Mike Oldfield - The Songs of Distant Earth

I really like a lot of Mike’s stuff - but for me that album is just an immensely well crafted and beautifully written piece which reflects and complements the book incredibly well.

That's one of my favourites of his too. I also like the 'Ibiza period' albums, especially Tr3s Lunas.

Songs Of Distant Earth also contains some incredibly low frequencies, which is quite fun if you play it really loud :).

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand." - Homer Simpson

Echo & The Bunnymen, "The Fountain"
11th studio album and for me it's their best.  I stopped playing their other stuff a long time ago but this album, which seems to be no one's favourite, is great.

Yes, Tr3s Lunas also gets a lot of play. Mike is a massively underrated guitarist as well as a hugely talented multi instrumentalist, producer and composer

I love it but unfortunately there is an actual housewide ban on me playing any of their stuff.

  • Crashing Dream by Rain Parade.

The production seems somewhat out of place on this album, being rather too glossy and smooth sounding. The synths don't fit either, not really gelling where the organ once did. RP's Matt Piucci recently said that they were talked into using a not very good producer by some very nice people, or words to that effect.

That said, there are some great songs on there and I still play it regularly to this day.

My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

    Megadeth - Risk

The last couple of albums from the melodic rock period with Marty Friedman seem to be regarded with a degree of contempt, but I like them.  Better than anything they've done subsequently.
Seconded, Cryptic Writings being a belter too.

    That's a shame.

When I hear that song, I have so many questions.

What time signature is the drummer playing in?

What tuning are the guitars in?

    Who is Foot Foot?

I listen to the song and I feel an emptyness that I myself have no pal called Foot Foot.

I love this LP too. They should have reversed the cover though.

I agree with you guys. Risk, Never Say Die. Proper albums. I'd add Coast to Coast and Structural Damage (by the supreme Steve Morse) to this list.

The Tin Machine album - consistently in my top 5 albums of all time, always something new to hear whenever I listen to it.  But it was completely panned when released.

And I also love VHIII.  And Bigger, Better, Faster, More.

But that’s about his best album from the first half of the 80s! You are surely not alone in liking it, not least because I think it’s pretty cool. Yes, he was a fool for omitting Blind Willie McTell, but it’s still a pretty cool record despite that.
