Bass overdrive?...

What's Hot
Confession...I’m a guitarist really. ;)
But I do play the bass a bit, I’m looking at getting an overdrive to use with mine as I love a bit of dirt on a bass.
ive a load of ods for the guitar and I’ve been really impressed with the likes of the tone city’s, Moskys and the like, I just wondered if you bass chaps had a similar alternative for the bass?

  • I absolutely love the Catalinbread SFT on bass.

Not sure if there's a cheaper version of the same circuit.

Darkglass on my board. If on a budget look at a used Digitech Bad Monkey

  • Darkglass Vintage is pretty versatile and works with any bass I’ve tried it with.

If you want something a bit meatier the Alpha Omega is cool too.

Be got the B3K V2 and the Alpha Omega.

i sold my B7K and Vintage Deluxe. I find the B series to be more versatile than the Vintage ones. The B will do a vintage sound but the vintage won’t do the B sound.

The AO is actually awesome as a clean preamp too. I often bypass the preamp on my TecAmp head and run the AO into the loop return.

And I’ve got the M900 amp as well.

    Great products.

My tc electronic bass amp head was designed by people who like to imagine that it emulates Ampeg tones. Overdrive is a built-in feature on the amp. I little bit of dirt does wonders for a Jazz or Precision Bass. Lots of dirt suits a RIC 4001.

    And a Fender Mustang Bass...

I use a Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz or a Behringer SF300 Super Fuzz (identical circuit) on the Fuzz1 mode with the gain at zero - it's more of a fuzzy overdrive than a fuzz at that point. Fuzz2 with the gain up a bit is more of an outright fuzz.

The Behringer is such a huge amount of fun for £24 new, every bass player should have one :).

EHX Bass Soul Food is good as a gentle overdrive.

I have a Soul Food, a Dark Glass Vintage Microtubes, a Tubescreamer Bass, a Boss ODB-3, and a Boss SD-1 guitar overdrive.

The TS Bass is probably the best, followed by the Boss SD-1.

I've also got a Sans Amp DI, which is more than just a distortion and the best pedal I have.

I have a Bearfoot Blueberry, and like it lots. Keeps the low end and really great for a low or medium gain type thing. (I might move it along though as I could use a pre with a DI.)

  • A wildcard option is to get in touch with Timholio at Fredric Effects and buy a Harmonic Percolator, but ask him to mod it for bass for you. It'll do massive fuzz if you want, but keep the harmonics down (i have mine at 9 o'clock) and it gives a really tasteful grindy drive without losing any character or definition.

There's a clip of Geddy being asked what the little switch does and him saying he doesn't know!

He wouldn't care, so long as he could stuff it up his nose!

You can get some heavy tones from the Vintage Ultra but it requires you get a bit more extreme with the EQ. It doesn’t have the mid scoop of the BxK series.

The AO is great for meaty low gain tones, I do slightly regret not waiting for the inevitable ultra version, though I actually found I preferred the tone of my B3K to my B7KU so there’s no guarantee I’d prefer the AOU over the AO...
