  • There's loads more bands to investigate if you love this kind of stuff - most of these are from the 70s:

USA - The Nerves (did the original of Hanging on the Telephone), The Shoes,Dwight Twilley, The Rubinoos, The Raspberries, The Breakaways, The Plimsouls, The Real Kids, The Romantics, The Flamin' Groovies, the Pandoras, Nashville Ramblers, The DB's, Prix, The Nazz, The Tweeds.....

UK: The Jook, The Pleasers, The Records

just look up any of these on YouTube!!!

I remember power pop being a thing in late 77/early 78 when record labels wanted to differentiate between up tempo guitar-based pop bands and punk/new wave bands - a sort of more sanitised and less threatening pop music.

Bands like Tonight and No Dice come to mind.

Yes this is true, but there had been power pop bands in the USA from the early 70s, Big Star and The Raspberries being the most notable. Ironically this was a kind of 'Americanisation' of the British Invasion (Who, Kinks, Beatles) of the 60s. Certainly the Raspberries were trying to take the British Invasion template and soften it for US audiences. Didn't really work commercially, but some of the records are really good.

  • Yes definitely Badfinger - classic stuff.
I tend to regard genre classifications are pointless, but I'm really struggling with a few of the more recent suggestions...

Beyond the big star influenced bands, I think of this type of thing as power pop too - strong pop melodies with a bit of chunk behind it - might not be proper power pop though I'll admit:
