As many of you know I'm in a band called Prion Son. We have released an EP and an album so far and haven't really got the kind of buzz and reaction we want from it. We know we're not going to be superstars but I would like to get my music in front of more people and see more of a reaction.

We recently completed another EP (mixed by @WiresDreamDisasters of this very forum) and we've made a conscious decision not to release it immediately.

The reason being that we want the release to make more of a splash than our previous ones. So we have some plans to deliver auxiliary content drip-feed style in the run up to a release around the middle of this year. As part of this process I'm also going to blog about some of the things we've been doing.

The blogs purpose is two fold, firstly I want to track what seems to work and what doesn't. Secondly I'm hoping that there is an appetite for other bands to follow some of the things we are doing and inspire their own marketing campaigns and this interest will in turn drive more interest in the band.

So I'd be most grateful if you check out my first blog post

http://prionson.com/blog/2019/01/16/hello-world/

I'd appreciate any and all comments..even if it;'s just to say "too long didn't read" or whatever. Or maybe some of you are also bloggers got good tips for structuring content etc?

Cheers.

  • So second poast in, this time I look at how we did with our last album launch in order to set a target for the EP launch.

    http://prionson.com/blog/2019/01/28/what-does-success-look-like/

If anyone actually cares would be really interested to see how you did over your last launch period as I have no idea really what the average launch is like for an originals band these days.

  • I have no idea what is supposed to be the right way. I think YouTube and twitter are good. I haven't done anything on YouTube yet though

  • We have some (convoluted) plans for twitter that I'll probably write about in my next article. So good to know its still a valid platform.

@PolarityMan My suggestion would be to get someone onboard who can create an image for you and market it. As a potential consumer, I was totally turned off by "we have 3 software engineers in the band", and the . What you've written is all good stuff, but it should stay behind the scenes for your own internal planning. I don't want to read it, I want to see something creative and artistic to create an image in my mind to go with the music. I hope this comes across as constructive.

It's definitely a valid point. We will be relaunching our main site shortly and I'll prob get some posts going about the progress on that too.

The blog (assuming anyone reads it at all) isn't really aimed directly at our target audience it's more targeted at other people doing DIY promotion.

Maybe I will bump up the priority on a post about the visuals etc as it would definitely be a good thing to get feedback on before putting live.

  • My humble opinion. Sack off the website. Just use it as a landing page that points to your social media.

    Where is your insta??

I think Robin has a good point.

That's more or less the plan.....Alex is putting together a single page version at the moment, it's not done but as a sneak preview:

  • Just a small update...our debut Snowfall EP isnt on streaming, so to cross promote a gig we're going to re-release it on to Spotify.

    http://prionson.com/blog/2019/02/25/re-releasing-old-material/

Dont really count this as part of the new EP strategy so no update to the thread title etc.

Is this blog on your website in such a way that all your fans can read it?!?!
Damn. You don't want to be chronicling all this guff on there. It comes across as a bit desperate. Remove it. It makes your band look like some kind of a university dissertation.

I havent checked out the music yet, or the production, or the mixes etc, but straight away, I'm already getting steered into thinking it's going to be a bit "not my cup of tea" with the branding etc.

  • New update - a look at what we're planning to do with video support for our release:

    http://prionson.com/blog/2019/12/31/video-content/?preview=true

To address @Nerine The blogs are not linked from any of our band social media or web pages. It's not really aimed at listeners so much as other people who DIY promote bands. More of the whys etc on that later.

Ok so this isn't really my genre but for this purpose I listened all the way through,  ...my comments are -

    1. A 6 min song is far too long to get my attention and with the Vox not coming in for a whole minute...nah..Im off by then.
    2. The Live vid is a good idea, but again.... some chat and the 1 1/2 min of noodling before any action....Im long gone....

Maybe consider one video with a montage of about 3 songs, around 1 Min each, that way new listeners get more of a idea of what you are about, I may like some of the 2 songs which will make me look further.

Youtube is the way to go, Twitter is good for chat but I dint see it as a promotional tool, Instagram and Facebook are the main avenues for exposure.

The new videos aren't released yet so guessing you viewed the live video :)

This is a good point though, we can create short "trailer" videos to release ahead of the main thing to get double duties out of one release.

That's going on the ideas list for sure.
