Gordon Banks

Goalkeeper of legend, 81.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

    Just heard - so sad

I was to young to remember 1966 - But recall 1970 and the awesome Brazilian side so of course I recall that save and seen it shed loads of time - Some will always say that if Banks had been in goal v Germany when we lost 3-2 after a 2 nil lead, then we'd have gone further in that tournament - In truth we'll never know

I always recall he received a standing ovation at many away grounds when he went towards the kop ends, especially at Liverpool, to take up his position between the posts

Tragic that such a career was cut short due to the car accident

RIP and yes I had to watch that save once more

A proper actual great.  If there is a valhalla for goalkeepers he just got a seat at the top table.

After that save, as they were preparing for the corner, Bobby Moore went up to him and said "bloody hell, Gordon, you could have held on to it".

Not too long after there was this penalty save against West Ham:

Banks also brought on a talented young Peter Shilton at Leicester city.

GB always came across as a true gentle giant, but those huge hands!

    RIP Gordon.

Never knew he was a Yorkshire lad - just found this out when reading some other info - I like him even more now

  • RIP Gordon.

I’ve just watched that save again that he makes from the Pele header and it’s just unbelievable that he manages to somehow save it.

It’s something you have to watch again and again, if only for the fact Pele actually celebrates thinking it’s gone in.
