The skins and suedes liked Slade, all those girls in their Crombies and Ben Sherman's - scary. Marc's fans on the other hand were the hot girls in satin and velvet tat. No contest. Who's going to romance a girl between the sheets? Noddy yelling about being crazee now or Marc warbling through Prophets Seers and Sages?..
The early Slade skinhead phase was a con, their manager made them do it so they could have an "identity" for marketing purposes.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

  • Out of the two, Slade. Never liked T.Rex, as i'm old enough to not only to remember, but to have seen, Marc Bolan in his previous existence as Tyrannasaurus Rex... rather boring -  largely n number of variations of just one song.

It's funny how, at the time, that bit never seemed remotely gay, but listening to it now, it's so camp you'd swear they were taking the piss on purpose!
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

Actually, the band that trumped them all at this time was....

    Sparks.

One of my all time favourite bands but they came along about 5 years later

    Slade, easily.

And The Sweet's b-sides were better than the hits.

Skinheads never liked Slade, we were uniquely into rock steady , bluebeat and ska.

I like both but would choose Slade if I had to pick one.  Slayed was one of the first rock albums I listened to.  One I alternated with Harvest by Neil Young.  On my cousins hi-fi system as I did not have any replay kit myself.  I did not play guitar at that stage [circa 1972/73] either.

I've got to bring Wizzard into this. Ball Park Incident, See My Baby Jive, I wish It Could Be Christmas, Angel Fingers - classics to my young ears. Actually, classics to my much older ears these days.

Yes, Slade.  Weren't the Sweets hits written and played on by Chinn and Chapman with very little involvement from the band?  Maybe explains the b-sides sounding different/better!

Chinn and Chapman also wrote for Mud and Suzi Q amongst others.
    Mike Chapman produced My Sharona.

Slade without a doubt, up to and including Gudbye To Jane.
Slade Alive still sounds absolutely monster. 'Hear Me Calling' still blows the plaster off the walls.

Much of the power coming from Jim Lee's superb bass playing, just smoking at 1:28 in to the song ..

  • I love them both.. I'm a big fan of Slade due to their correct pronunciation of all words. Top songs and limitless energy. Rawk.

The Slider is one of my all time records. Great songs and amazing sounding production. Still sounds fantastic.
