The Voice in your head

What's Hot

You know, that voice you hear in your head when you read stuff. Whose voice is it? Is it yours? Is it a posher version of you? Or something different?

Does it change when, for example, you read posts from different people on this forum or if you're reading WhatsApps in a group chat etc.

Not sure what the point is but I'd be interested to see if other people share this curiosity.

For the record, my voice in my head is somewhere between a posher version of myself and Sir Ian McKellen

Mines Morgan Freeman. Especially when I think of him saying the word “Titty Sprinkles”.

  • Me but smarter. I'm much cleverer in my head than I am out loud.

I read a couple of comedy books last year ( Stewart Lee, James Acaster) and found they didn't really work unless I had an approximation of their voice in my head.

  • Interesting, especially as the meerkats and MoreThan Freeman both have an insurance link.

Yes I think you're right about reading authors with well known voices, maybe that's where my Gandalf comes from

I don't think there's a voice at all when I read. I perceive the words, the lexical library in my brain holds each word for a fraction of a second and my auditory cortex does indeed hold the "feel" of the sound of the word during that time, but there's no associated voice, no accent to speak of. It's like the ghost of a voice. I'd say it's like a robot, but that's not right because at the same time the part of my brain that deals with emotional understanding does its part to modulate the meaning.

  • I honestly don't "hear" any voice in my head when I'm reading. Don't know why, but it might be because I learned to speed-read at a very young age, and it's not actually possible to speak as fast as I read.

Interesting post - Mine is definitely me when I'm just reading posts on here, got a northern accent.  I'm pretty sure when I'm reading a book I mentally put a bit of persona in to the characters

If you can read this then my time machine works.

Mines is just me thinking/ reading - I don't associate it with any particular accent or tone. It is not the same as speaking or hearing someone speak.

I’m not aware of a voice when I read anything silently but this thread has reminded me of something from years ago. When my lad was very young he liked the Super Ted stories, which I very frequently had to read him at bedtime. He insisted on me having voices for the characters so Super Ted, Spotty Man, Texas Pete and Skeleton all had their own voices and heaven help me if I got the voices wrong. Skeleton was given a very camp voice that was lost on the lad but added interest for me. Fortunately no-one outside of his room ever heard those voices.

Depends. I hear the writings of humorists such as Jeremy Hardy, Mark Steel, David Mitchell, Willy Rushton and Alan Coren in their respective voices - except, of course, for de Idi Amin bulletins, which are in de bronzed tones o' John Bird.

    Art criticism is Bob Hughes.

It is difficult not to "hear" Douglas Adams' words in his voice or that of Peter Jones.

    Be seeing you.

Mine's me - but on a related note, if I swore out loud as much as I swear in my head, I'd be sectioned.
