  • Oh man, this going to be hard! There was a guy at the guitar show trying to get people to work out whether 5 or 6 samples were either a HB Les Paul or a SC Strat. I liked to think I did ok on that but it was by no means easy.

I'm not sure I could even do this with 10 of my own guitars, let alone 10 unfamiliar ones but I'll give it a go...

Point of order - only nine sound samples, and ten guitars.

Right, from phone I reckon I can peg:

    2 as the Jaguar
8 has to be the Strat
I felt like 9 was one of the semis but the bridge position makes me less sure.

I feel like I'm listening for the heavier string gauges on the offsets. I also felt like I could hear some hollowness on a couple but not sure now.

Also feel like the middle position is the easiest to recognise (assuming I'm right - if not then it's the most distinct!).

Fucking hard though. Great idea for a thread!

    EDIT:

Just had another listen. Maybe 2 is the JM...! Making 1 the Jag? FFS, this is impossible!  =)

  • Nice job! Had a quick listen. I think I can identify some fenders and a couple of P90s and HBs.
Not sure how we are to differentiate between the two LPs and two soapbars etc?

I sometimes think, therefore I am intermittent

  • Different guitars, different pickup types, different pickup locations, different scale lengths, different hardware, different electrics, solid and hollow bodies, and yet the sound for each one is still classic "1979 Fender Twin Reverb with EVM12L speakers".

Perhaps the differences would have been obvious if only you had said what species of wood each guitar was made from. =)

By the way, a great demo!

Brilliant. I thought you were joking when you suggested it. Very glad you were serious. Bravo

1 is probably a Fender (type)
    2 is probably a Gibson
    3 is probably a Gibson
    4 is the Jaguar
    5 is probably a Gibson
6 is probably a Fender (type)
    7 is probably the PRS
    8 is the Strat
9 is probably a Fender (type)
10 is probably a Fender (type)

Can't get closer than that without listening to them all several times, and even then not sure. Apart from the Strat they all fundamentally sound like electric guitars with two pickups.

Ha!  Not a chance, I'm not even going to try.  But I will have a listen later.

Harder than some would think. I've only got the internal PC speaker here in t'office so I'll stick my neck out first with some wild guessing and a process of elimination on a single listening.
    1 H
    2 E
    3 A
    4 K
    5 B
    6 F
    7 G
    8 C
    9 D
    10 J

I like that the playing doesn't exploit any of the guitars classic tonal voices, makes it quite a lottery.

I was just thinking about doing exactly the same thing today....

My thoughts based on a single listen through on iPad.
    1. Fano
    2. Fatter than 1 but quite snappy. LP Custom?
    3. PRS or HB Tele
    4. Plinkier. Jag
    5. Won’t load on my iPad. Listening later I think LP std.
    6. Strat or thinking Tele.
    7. Started mellow but really bright towards the end. JM
    8. Strat. So what was 6???
    9. Back to humbuckers, but fairly airy. I’ll guess 335.
    10. Quite dark to start but a bit of spank. I think humbuckers but clever wiring, so that means HB Tele or PRS

I will have a go at this at some point - but initial thoughts are that getting all ten right has longer odds than winning the Lottery....

Are they all on the same pick up? i.e. neck or bridge?

Also is the volume the same on all the guitars i.e. full?

Cancel the above questions, I have just had a listen with headphones, and evn if I knew the answers to the above would struggle on most, especially the humbuckers. They all sound pretty similar to me.
