Mac Help! A1222 = A1172? 85W MagSafe power adapter for MacBook Pro (15" late 2008)

The cable on the charger has a bad connection when it meets the adapter. Sooner or later no matter of twiddling will help it connect. Before that fateful day arrives, does anyone have a spare or can offer advice where to get hold of one?
Can I use an L cable instead of the T cable I have?
