    Oh God, not again
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Totally agreed. In a similar vein, Led Zep are possibly one of the most overrated bands in history.

My god I despair of this place sometimes.... ;)

Seriously though, even if you don't like the guitarists/bands in question theres no way Hendrix or Zep are over rated. Stone Roses and Joy Division were genre defining in their time and paved the way for many others. Not to mention Squire is amazing. Rory was a massive influence on others especially Irish players. I'm not a huge fan of Rorys albums but he was a great guitarist. Obviously all of that is IMHO.

That is cos you are comparing him to five decades of guitarists that took up his mantle and ran with it some more. You have to view him at a time of limited FX and technology and when everybody wanted to sing about Flowerpots and wearing Kaftans...

Depends what you are rating on, I can't listen to Led Zep because of Plant's voice.  I love Stone Roses but Ian Brown could barely sing at best.  The masses know Joy Division for one song.

You sum it up in the word influence I think. My favourite ever band is the pixies for the influence they had on me and on other bands I loved.  Most people seem totally indifferent or oblivious to them.

Part of the magic of Jimi + Kossoff and Pete Green is that they only had a short career - For different reasons they came and went all to briefly - There is only so much known material and we believe all has just about been found and released - It was a magic period of time - When Jimi came along, no one had really played guitar like him before hand

No way of knowing how Jimi's output would have changed if he was still around today - Looking at how J Beck, John McLaughlin and Santana went, amongst others, then I guess some form of jazz/fusion influenced

I can hardly say I'm the biggest fan of Jimi I but have a few recordings (I'm more of a placid follower) - Certain tracks like Wind Cries Mary and Little Wing and you have IMO some of the best Strat tones ever - Yet equally I've seen some live footage of various songs that sounds a awful - But boundaries were been pushed and challenged

His influences to others are well known and as with many guitar players, they possess something that we can learn from them - As with all players, there is no gold medal at the end of a 100 meter track, so no one is the best - But many are more influential than others

Why are they considered to be among the ‘greats’?
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    I regret nothing.

Joy Division are okay. A couple of good songs but yes, quite influential.

Roses are okay. A couple of good songs.

Speak to any fan an you'd think they were the greatest bands of all time.

Rory could play but not my taste at all. And while lots of people love him who has he influenced that isn't Irish? Who sounds like Rory in the way that, say, SRV inspired?

Nobody had a problem with Denzel though.... Racists!

Jeremy Kyle should do a programme about this topic. Danny Baker could attempt to salvage his broadcasting career by appearing as a guest. He could stoke controversy by pointing out resemblances between ape species. Oops, no. Neither of them will be doing that any more.

Please explain your concept of "overrated".

Because as far as I can see, the proposition "musician x is overrated" means  "a weighted average of the opinions of his fellow musicians, critics and the general audience rate x at a certain level.  I, however, think differently and am convinced that I am right".

Aesthetic judgement is subjective: all you're saying "my judgement is more valid than other peoples'".

What is your basis for thinking that, other than than simple narcissism?
