NGD! 2008 PRS SC 250

What's Hot

Actually NGD was Wednesday, but with work I hadn't the chance to post anything til today.

Picked up this 2008 PRS SC250 from @BluesyDave via the classifieds. (Thoroughly pleasant to deal with and all round nice chap!)

Never had a PRS before and was never really something I thought I would own, with far too many other guitars above them on the potential GAS list, but I thought this at just over a grand looked an excellent deal and I have to say, I am not disappointed!

The neck is a "wide fat" profile, which seems a bit of a misnomer as I don't find it particularly wide or fat! It seems to sit somewhere between Gibson's 50s and 60s profiles. It's definitely slimmer than my Gibson R8 and Tokai LS150 but more of a handful than the slim 60s Gibson profile. It also seems nowhere near as wide as your common or garden Ibanez Wizard type neck (although clearly much fatter) - if anything it's closer to a chunky fender neck profile than anything else I would say.

The pickups as listed on the hang tag are 250s, which someone on here said they thought were identical to Tremonti pickups but with a cover.  Turns out they were right - they're even labelled Tremonti underneath so apparently just had covers added.

Excellent condition for an 11 year old guitar.  A couple of very minor dings, but nothing serious.  The pots have a little play in them, so I may rewire it with some new pots at some stage but all in all, I'm very very pleased.  Had a good couple of hours on it last night and it plays brilliantly.  Sounds great too. The neck, I would describe as creamy smooth with a very nice fat sound.  It cleans up my Sheriff nicely when rolling off the volume.  The bridge pickup is pure modern rock.  Hot and biting, it absolutely wails.  It's very responsive to digging in with the pick.

Love the details like the adjustable wraparound bridge, well cut (graphite?) nut and the locking tuners which seem rock solid, even immediately after a change of strings.  Suffice to say, happy with my purchase :D

You've hit the nail on the head about wide/fat  - Many get hung about about the fear factor of this wide/fat criteria - Yes it sits between the Gibson 50's and 60's profile - I recall the first time I played a PRS, about 30 years ago, what turned me on to them was the neck - Nothing to do with dentist or other bull - It just felt and played what I wanted many other guitars to be - Fully appreciate the feel is a matter of taste

I've known many who slag a PRS Guitar, for whatever reason that maybe - But when you ask them about which neck they dislike, the admit they have never played such a guitar - How can you dislike something you've not played ?

    Enjoy your PRS

I'm glad someone eventually bought this because I live just down the road from @BluesyDave and I really had to resist going for it myself.

it's a one piece top too, which is pretty rare.

Nice colour, and the best PRS high gain pickups IMO

A grand is an absolute snip, and the one piece top makes it pretty special. Guess you will be listing your R8 soon.....
