Best pentatonic classic rock solo to learn

What's Hot
Hi All

I want to invest some time learning a really great classic rock or rock blues solo (using only pentatonic scale) that contains lots of really great but simple little licks and phrases that can be stripped out of the solo and easily recalled and ‘recycled’ when improvising/jamming.

Some songs seem to ‘give’ more of these than others... Are there solos that you’ve learned that have helped you develop your stock pentatonic ‘moves’ more than others?

Am I talking crap or do you guys know what I’m looking for?

BTW, ideally the solos need to be available and  broken down on youtube for me to learn them effectively. Tab is a bit laborious for me.

The best one i can think of is from some retired rock star in Bm. Plenty of licks to be re-used

Good call. Could be a contender. Certainly plenty to learn in that one!! So do you find yourself using licks you learned from that solo?

  • How about the first guitar break on the Cream version of Crossroads?  I think that's a good example of a really well structured solo packed full of reuseable ideas/licks.  It's one which I think sits as well as any over the rhythm part and there's a lot you can get from  they way it flows and transitions over the changes.

That riff at 1:40 and the descent a little bit after are just so useful to get under the fingers.

All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix. Mostly C#m pentatonic with loads of memorable licks and a fair amount of invention - and really not that difficult. Also loads of YouTube tutorials for it.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • Plenty of AC/DC solos would probably fit that bill. Easy starting points would probably be 'Back In Black' and '' You Shook Me All Night Long'.

Agreed. A great example of combining the major and minor pentatonics. My favourite tutorial is at the link below, which importantly captures the feel.

    It's not a competition.

Zakk Wylde's solo in Desire (Ozzy) is all pentatonic licks. Start them slow build up the speed.

Easy one to play, fun to play along to, lots of changes throughout the song.

Steppin' Out (Clapton 'Beano' album) is good to get stuck into. Been learning that for 30 years...

Also any ZZ Top, 'Eliminator' has a load of simple but deceptively cool licks to rip off (he seemed to slow down his lead playing around this time)
