2009 Gibson Traditional Les Paul in a deep Heritage Cherry Sunburst

Superb condition upgraded with locking Sperzel tuners (Professionally fitted by Phil at Vintage & Modern in Thame Buckinghamshire), with original hardcase and Gibson USA check sheet. Blemish on headstock on left of Gibson logo where one of those crappy clip on tuners was left which has caused discolouration. There are also blemishes around some of the tuner poles, I think it is something to do with the lacquer but on the Gibson forum there are people with the same issue that say it might be to do with string tension and nuts on the tuners not being tight enough, but its only aesthetic and doesn’t affect playability. Plays beautifully and purchased for £1699 New from PMT in Oxford

  • Thats a lovely top and a great price, like the ther chap said - be patient! ......... Regards what you'd read on the Gibson forum and the discolourstion being caused by string tension, thats a new one on me, sounds like a load of tosh and more likely to be a reaction to plastic or sweat etc

  • Yes guess wait for the right buyer. It's an odd place for sweat to get any issues and there is no plastic there to affect it

imho the marks around the tuners are due to over tightening the replacement tuners just slightly popping the finish. ive done it myself (doh)
    its no biggie.
    good luck with the sale.

  • Lovely guitar, good luck with the sale.

And yep, the 'professionals' have over tightened the machine heads, causing the lacquer to warp :(

  • Thanks, Phil changed the machine heads on my Tokai love rock to grovers and had no issues, maybe the tokai's are more hardy?

ive only seen this on gibson headstocks, most if not all others would be fine.
i wouldnt b particularly critical of the luthier, it can be fine and pop a bit later, or some gibsons will be fine.
if it particularly bothered any potential buyers it pretty easy for someone to refinish just the headstock face. :)

Or maybe you're not such a gorilla as the 'pro' that fitted the Sperzels...?!

I was refering to the mark on the Gibson Logo, you inferred it was due to a cheap clip on tuner that was presumabley made of plastic? Plastic reacts with the nitro finish, Why is a headtsock a funny place to get sweat?

Ah yes the mark on the logo would be rubber of tuner reacting with it. But sweat near the base of the tuner pole?? Sweat on the tuner I can understand as you touch it but I think that the marks are due to over tension and loose tuners not sweat
