Same notes as a sus2 chord - 1 5 9 so C G D in the key of C - but voiced in a different order, with the 9 above the 5 rather than between the 1 and 5 like in a sus2. Also performs a different function - if the suspension is resolved the 2/9 in a sus2 would resolve to the 3rd (as in 'Every Breath You Take'), whereas the 9 in a 5add9 resolves down to the octave, as in 'Message In A Bottle'.
