DownbytheRiver's Sea Foam Green Junior

What's Hot
Well, I'm pretty sure I'm in but I am waiting for payday before ordering the kit.

The title says it all - maybe torty plate, probably better pickup (Melvyn Hiscock) with white dog ear cover....

Relicing....? So probably Nitro....

Maybe competition stripes.... or a compo number.... or Sea Foam Green sparkle?

Still, I have time to plan - payday's next week!

  • Kit ordered (couldn't wait). Pickup ordered (p90 with a cream dogear cover) from Melvyn Hiscock. When I did my modded LPJ I used a set of PAFs from Melvyn and they were brilliant. Since he is P90 obsessed I am sure this will be even better. I shall look sadly in Shugz direction - would have loved to have used a loom from him... again the one in the LPJ was simply beautiful - I guess I'll have to get an PIO cap from somewhere and do it myself!

I'm thinking something vaguely like this (love the controls on this but that might be too ambitious).

Still like to do competition stripes or similar... and now I'm thinking about the headstock shape....

Should turn out nice. Racing stripes would look good with it.

That looks grand - it has to be done :)

I get all my looms from Marc at Mojopickups - top quality stuff :)

  • Good idea. Meanwhile dry assembly suggests no huge problems but there's some interesting drilling! Also design is developing. pics later

  • Question: in theory, could one convert this to some kind of tenon based set neck beastie?

  • Ok - bit of a delay but paint ordered and work planned!

any pics of the kit?   I nearly went for this one.

As for converting it  to a set-neck.   I wouldn't bother.  Juniors are made much like a bolt-on neck anyway, they don't have the usual gibson tenon, the neck is left full width and sits in a full width pocket.  so technically making one a set neck  is just a case of gluing the neck in place, but you also need to ensure neck angle is correct and you have a solution for screw holes before you do this.  You also need to be sure there is no trace of a finish or sealer coat on the join

  • Comments:

All seems pretty reasonable for the cost. Neck fit is really good - neck screw drillings are wildly wonky!

Neck is very chunky - like that a lot.

Will be changing the pickup - more info follows...

That body looks like it's basswood? If so you won't be needing the grain filler, sorry.

Grain filler is only necessary on open pored woods such as ash and mahogany.

That looks like a nicely matched body.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • Hopefully it will disappear under a mass of paint this weekend!

  • Life itself has rather overtaken this project - no progress.

Doubt I'll finish in the alloted period but hoping to get going a bit soon.
