Which Solid Body Guitar after a Tele?

What's Hot
ROOGROOG Frets: 557

I have a Tele at the moment and was wondering which solid body guitar offers the most diverse sound when set against the Tele?

Jazzmaster / Jaguar / Stratocaster / Some kind of HSS type, Yamaha?

Perhaps its my playing or just my ear but Im struggling to make a choice, they seem to sound similar to each other. I prefer a smooth jazz type tone.

I also have an Epi ES 339 and I quite like its shorter scale.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I'd go for a dgt it'll do anything really or a les Paul for a classic solid body humbucker sound to complement your tele and 339.

/\ Im 50 something, Im gonna feel so 'sheep like' buying a PRS!   :)

Are they worth the psychological damage a purchase like this might cause?

Something with HBs perhaps like LP or SG type guitars.

Funnily enough, you mention a Strat. I think of Strats and Teles as being like brothers can be come times.  In some ways they are very similar, but at other times very, very different from each other.

Didn't consider another HB guitar, I thought the ES kind of covered that.

    SG2000 looks good.

If you like a smooth tone, personally I'd forget Fender offsets.

As you already have a semi with HB's, I'd go for an SG or Les Paul with P90's or a HSS Strat.

Strat with a ballsy humbucker in the bridge position.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Either that or a normal strat, because I think there is still enough difference versus a Tele overall to make it worthwhile.

IMO, if sounding as different as possible is the main requirement then you've already got a nice single coil guitar, and a nice humbucker guitar.  What would be most different is the in between positions of a stratocaster (neck+middle, middle+bridge).

    +1

And it has a trem, which are the two things that a Tele can't really do.

By comparison even any humbucker, fixed-bridge solid guitar is both closer to a Tele and to a 339.

  • For sonic diversity I'd suggest a Jazzmaster or some sort of LP Junior?

Other option is something like a Gretsch.  The pickups do sound different to your conventional Fender/Gibson style pickups.  If you want solid then you Duo Jet type stuff, or you can go for the big hollowbody stuff.  Either way it would be different to what you have now.

There is a lot of merit to what has been said above about Strats and Les Pauls as well.  Choice, Choices!

I'd take the opportunity to go into a big shop on a quite day and play lots of different ones to work out what you want.

I think you are right of course, I should try some, in fact I have tried a few, but I just hate playing in stores, often you can't hear your self playing for the noise of others or alternatively the place goes silent and I whimp out!

I thought I'd ask just to narrow it down a bit.

To try em all out is the answer though!

Go first thing in the morning.  I usually find stores are quietest right when they open.  If you can go early in the day during the week even better.

Strat or Strat-derived guitar, with any pickup configuration.

Give thought to a "Superstrat" of some (any) description, but be aware if you look at a Floyd-equipped guitar and aren't used to them.

There's some good used guitars around and good prices.

If you like a smooth Jazz tone, get the ultimate smooth Jazz guitar, the smaller bodied Ibanez GB10:

Stratoblaster, clearly. Personally I love Les Pauls but ICBM is right, for good variety I would go for a Strat.

And then a Les Paul... :D

I read "I prefer smooth Jazz tone", so not really a solid body guitar with single coil pups then.
